Mendenhall River flooding update: remember to care for mental health

August 13, 2024 – News

A week out from the August 6 flooding, many in the community are facing significant loss and uncertainty. Exhaustion and strain are mounting; the end may seem far from sight.

At this time, it’s more important than ever to care for your mental well-being alongside your physical needs. That might mean letting yourself take a break from cleaning or repair work, or checking in with friends or loved ones. It might also mean counseling or other forms of support.

If you’re in need of immediate help, the Disaster Distress Helpline provides 24/7 support to those in distress following a disaster. Through the helpline, crisis counselors listen to what’s on your mind with patience and without judgment. To be connected with a counselor, call or text 1-800-985-5990.

We’re also expecting some new arrivals that might bring a smile to your face—check back tomorrow to learn more about visiting Comfort K9s.

Transportation to Disaster Assistance Centers Available

Transportation to State Disaster Assistance Centers will be available for any resident who is unable to travel on their own—whether because of a damaged vehicle, mobility challenges, or any other reason. Please call (907) 632-2165 to request transportation.

Disaster Assistance Centers, where residents can receive assistance applying for State of Alaska disaster aid, will be open Wednesday, August 14 through Friday, August 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Mendenhall Valley Library, 3025 Dimond Park Loop
  • Generations Southeast Community Learning Center, 3239 Hospital Drive

We appreciate the work of Alaska National Guard and Capital Transit to provide this service.

Emergency Shelter and Temporary Housing

Many residents who initially planned to quickly return to their homes are now realizing that repairs will take longer than anticipated. Others are facing unexpected health and safety concerns.

If you are unable to stay in your home because of flood damage and are in need of shelter, please email [email protected] or visit a Disaster Assistance Center to be connected with those coordinating shelter and temporary housing.

Volunteer Center Open 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. This Week

We still need volunteers! The Melvin Park volunteer center will be open from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday this week.

Much of the most urgent work to be done involves mucking and drying out crawlspaces. We are especially in need of volunteers who are ready and willing to get into tight spaces and get dirty. Bring your Xtra Tufs and a sense of adventure!
