Mendenhall River flooding update: crisis canines in Juneau, JCF relief fund open

Today offered opportunities to reflect on the generosity of those within and without our community as a number of new support resources became available to those affected by the flood—including some arriving on four legs.

Crisis Canines in Juneau Through August 21

Good news for animal lovers in need of a little boost—three Crisis Canine teams arrived in Juneau today to provide comfort and emotional support to flood-impacted residents, emergency responders, and volunteers. These furry friends and their handlers are highly trained and provide a welcome reprieve from stress and long days of hard work.

The Crisis Canine teams will visit flood-impacted neighborhoods, shelters, Disaster Assistance Centers, and schools. They’re scheduled to be in Juneau for a full week from Wednesday, August 14 to Wednesday, August 21.

Mendenhall Flood Relief Fund Open for Applications, Accepting Donations

The Juneau Community Foundation has reestablished the Mendenhall Flood Relief Fund to provide support to those affected by flooding. If you have experienced significant loss as a result of the flooding, you are encouraged to apply for relief funds.

Many businesses, the tourism industry, foundations, and individuals in Juneau and beyond have made contributions to the fund. We are deeply moved by the generosity of those in our community and beyond. Dehumidifiers and Fans Available for Delivery

A fresh—and hefty—supply of dehumidifiers, fans, and PPE is arriving tomorrow and will be available to residents in need. Supplies will be delivered directly to households by request—if you’re in need of any of these items to help clean up and dry out, sign up at bit.ly/juneau-flood.

Request a Meter Turn-Off

In the wake of damage to your home, it’s easy to overlook the important step of turning off your utility meter. If your home is uninhabitable and you cannot use water or sewer services due to recent flooding, please contact the CBJ Meters team to request a water turn-off. This will make sure you are not billed unnecessarily

Disaster Assistance Centers Now Open

Disaster Assistance Centers for residents impacted by the recent flooding are now open at the Mendenhall Valley Library and Generations Southeast Community Learning Center. Visit the centers to get help applying for Individual Assistance from the State of Alaska or learn more about how the program works.

The centers are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Wednesday, August 14 through Friday, August 16. If you can’t make it during these times, assistance is available after hours by appointment—call (907) 632-2165.

If you need help getting to the center, transportation is available thanks to the Alaska National Guard and Capital Transit. Call (907) 632-2165 to make a request.

To make your application go as quickly and easily as possible, please bring the following information with you when you visit:

  • Description of damages and/or losses
  • Home ownership documentation
  • Insurance information
  • Personal ID
  • Proof of occupancy (for example, a utility bill)
