Juneau’s community risk level will raise to modified Level 3 High on July 30

As COVID-19 cases continue to increase in Juneau, the City and Borough of Juneau Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is raising the overall community risk to a modified Level 3 High with a partial implementation of the updated Community Mitigation Strategies on Friday, July 30 at 12:01 a.m. Case activity remains at the Very High alert category for both the 7- and 14-day case rates and community spread based cases continue to occur at an increasing rate.

In an attempt to help mitigate the current increase in case activity, the EOC is requiring all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, to wear masks over their nose and mouth in indoor public settings, as well as in outdoor settings where six feet of social distancing cannot be maintained.

“The EOC does not take lightly the decision to place more mitigation requirements on the community and our businesses,” said Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Incident Commander Mila Cosgrove. “This masking requirement is an attempt to prevent continued case count activity while having as light a touch as possible on our local economy and activities. This updated requirement is in line with the CDC’s guidance that masks be worn by all individuals in indoor settings in areas with high transmission of COVID-19. The State of Alaska has issued the similar guidance. ”

All other mitigation measures will remain the same:

• Indoor gatherings are limited to 50 people, unless a COVID-19 mitigation plan is submitted and approved by the CBJ Emergency Operations Center.
• Indoor service at bars must not exceed 50% capacity.
• Restaurants are strongly recommended to reduce capacity to ensure physical distancing between parties and are recommended to require reservations. Delivery and curbside pickup is also encouraged.
• Personal service businesses must require appointments and no waiting areas.
• Gyms are limited to 50% capacity.
• All travelers are recommended to either take a pre-travel test or a free COVID-19 airport test. Unvaccinated travelers should avoid indoor public areas and crowded locations until you get your test result and return to the airport for a follow-up test in 5-14 days.

Juneau currently has 110 active cases of COVID-19 – 103 residents and 7 non-residents. Due to the increased mitigation level and case count activity, the EOC will again be reporting daily case count activity on Mondays through Fridays, starting August 2.
