Join CBJ and Tlingit & Haida for flood preparedness open houses and sandbag pickup in May and June
The City and Borough of Juneau and Tlingit & Haida will host three community events in Dimond Park to distribute free sandbags and share flood preparedness information on May 31, June 7, and June 14 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Drop by the Thunder Mountain Middle School parking lot to pick up sandbags and ask experts your questions about topics like flood insurance and how to protect your property.
Sandbag Pickup
CBJ and T&H will provide bags, sand, and shovels. Some pre-filled sandbags will be available, as well as shovelers to help fill bags. We encourage all who are able to fill their own sandbags to do so, so that we can prioritize helping those who need assistance.
Each household at risk of glacial lake outburst flooding (GLOF) is welcome to 50 sandbags. More sandbags may become available depending on demand—visit juneau.org/newsroom or follow CBJ on Facebook for the latest updates.
Get Flood Ready
CBJ and Tlingit & Haida are working together to help Juneau prepare for GLOFs along the Mendenhall River. New and updated maps showing predicted inundation at different flood levels are now available at bit.ly/MendenhallFloodMaps. Check the new maps to see how a GLOF might affect your neighborhood.
Visit CBJ and T&H’s new flood preparedness website at bit.ly/JuneauFloodReady to check current conditions and learn more about individual steps you can take to prepare for a flood event.
