In-person learning at schools begins Jan. 11: Notice to drivers & meal plan update

January 8, 2021 – FYI

The Juneau School District will be expanding in-person instruction for students beginning on Monday, January 11. Monday will be the first day of in-person classes for small groups of kindergarten and first grade students in elementary schools, as well as a portion of the middle school student population. Other elementary grades start at a later date. Tuesday, January 12, will be the first day of in-person high school classes for Juneau-Douglas High School and Thunder Mountain High School.

Drivers are urged to use caution when driving near neighborhood schools next week. With more students returning to school buildings, expect an increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic, as well as more school bus stops in residential areas. Flashing school zone lights will be in use at the start and end of the school day:

  • Elementary school students arrive at 11:30 a.m. and leave at 2:30 p.m.
  • Middle school students arrive at 8:30 a.m. and leave at 3 p.m.
  • High school students arrive at 9:15 a.m. and leave at 3:45 p.m.

The Juneau School District will continue providing free breakfast and lunch meals to all children ages 18 and younger for the rest of the school year, while at school or at home. Wednesdays will continue to be distance learning days, and free breakfast and lunch meals will be offered for pick up. At high schools, Monday will also be a distance learning day and meals will be available for pick up.

Starting January 11, there will be no more home meal delivery, as First Student buses will be needed to transport students. The Gruening Park and Cedar Park meal distribution buses will also be discontinued.

For students and other children at home, most schools will be distributing meals from their front door during a designated time each weekday. Please check directly with your school for meal distribution times.
