In honor of Dr. Walter Soboleff, write & send a letter at City Museum in November

October 31, 2019 – FYI

During the month of November, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum will provide complimentary note cards and US postage to anyone who chooses to write a personal note of encouragement or gratitude to someone in their lives. This is in recognition of Dr. Walter Soboleff Day, November 14.

In 2014, HB217 was signed into law by the 28th Alaska State Legislature, 2nd session, “an act establishing November 14 each year as Dr. Walter Soboleff Day”. Dr. Soboleff spent his life working with people, with the goal of higher education, self-respect, spiritual values, tolerance, and equality. Those fortunate enough to have known him may fondly remember his frequent handwritten notes and cards.

Walter Alexander Soboleff (November 14, 1908 – May 22, 2011) was an influential member of the Juneau community and throughout Alaska. Of Tlingit and Russian-German descent, he contributed to many organizations, including serving in all of the offices of the Alaska Native Brotherhood Grand Camp, participating in the Juneau Lions Club, teaching Native Cultural Studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, serving in the AK National Guard, and his lifetime avocation as Presbyterian pastor for the Juneau Memorial Church and as a traveling preacher.

Drop by the City Museum in November between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays to pick up a card and a stamp. Feel free to write your note while visiting the museum. Mail the card yourself or have the Museum deliver it to the post office for you.
