Heavy rains could cause mudslides, avalanches

November 30, 2020 – News

Starting late tonight through late Wednesday night, the National Weather Service in Juneau is forecasting heavy rainfall along with significant snowmelt. The 48-hour rainfall totals are expected to range from five to 10 inches. These atmospheric conditions, along with the recent freeze-thaw cycle and already saturated conditions, could destabilize the ground and snow, causing mudslides and avalanches. The City and Borough of Juneau wants the public to be aware of the potential for mudslides and avalanches over the next couple of days.

In addition, the National Weather Service has a Flood Watch in effect from late tonight through late Wednesday night: “There is increasing confidence that flooding of small streams and creeks will occur along with potential risk of debris flows near steep terrain in prone areas.” Check the National Weather Service’s hydrological predictions for Montana Creek and Jorden Creek here.

CBJ Docks & Harbors Department requests that all boat owners check their vessels during stormy weather. Please make sure that mooring lines are secure, pumps are operating correctly, and boats are not collecting rainwater.

Likewise, Juneau International Airport requests that all float pond tenants address any issues with their aircraft/float dock that may be affected by the extreme weather.
