CBJ reports five new COVID-19 cases in Juneau

The City and Borough of Juneau Emergency Operations Center is reporting five new residents identified with COVID-19 in Juneau. Public Health is attributing one case to community spread, one to secondary transmission, and three are under investigation.

One of today’s new cases is associated with Thunder Mountain High School, bringing the cluster total to seven. Within the cluster, six cases are individuals at Thunder Mountain High School and one is not. Public Health defines a cluster as at least five connected cases.

Another new case today is an individual at Sít’ Eetí Shaanáx̱ – Glacier Valley Elementary School. Contact tracing is underway and those who may have been exposed in the school are being directly contacted and given instructions to quarantine and test. Individuals who have not been identified as a close contact do not need to quarantine or be tested at this time. A close contact is considered being within six feet of someone with COVID-19 for a cumulative of 15 minutes or more per day. One classroom will switch to distance delivery; all other classes will continue on regular schedules.

Cumulatively, Juneau has had 1,267 residents test positive for COVID-19 and 155 nonresidents. There are 28 active cases in Juneau and 1,389 individuals have recovered. All individuals with active cases of COVID-19 are in isolation.

Statewide, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) reports 201 new people identified with COVID-19 – 199 are residents and two are nonresidents. Alaska has had 63,977 cumulative resident cases of COVID-19 and a total of 2,703 nonresidents.

Vaccine information

According to DHSS, as well as data reported from the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs:

  • 18,038 people in Juneau have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. That’s 56.8 percent of Juneau’s total population.
  • 15,184 have completed their vaccine series. That’s 47.8 percent of Juneau’s total population.

Statewide, 300,627 people have received their first dose, according to DHSS, and 247,758 are fully vaccinated.
