CBJ reports 11 new COVID-19 cases in Juneau from Thursday & today

September 18, 2020 – News

The City and Borough of Juneau Emergency Operations Center is reporting eleven new Juneau residents with COVID-19 – two cases were reported yesterday and nine today. Public Health is attributing the two cases from Thursday to community spread. Of the nine new today, five are a result of secondary transmission and four are under investigation. One of the secondary cases is linked to the August social gathering, bringing that cluster total to 37 so far.

The two individuals with COVID-19 reported yesterday are inmates at Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau. They were recently admitted to the facility and tested for COVID-19 while in quarantine as part of LCCC’s screening process. Neither individual had contact with the general population of inmates. Both individuals are currently in isolation. Public Health is in the process of conducting contact investigations. No LCCC staff are identified as close contacts.

Cumulatively, Juneau has had 266 residents test positive for COVID-19 since March and 98 nonresidents. There are 43 active cases in Juneau and 320 individuals have recovered. All individuals with active cases of COVID-19 are in isolation. There are currently three people with COVID-19 hospitalized at Bartlett Regional Hospital.

CBJ’s numbers – on cumulative case counts, and active and recovered cases – differ from the Alaska Health and Social Services dashboard numbers due to more timely reporting. CBJ is in regular contact with the Public Health officials in Juneau, and CBJ’s numbers are based on information received directly from them.

Statewide, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reports 112 new people with COVID-19 – 108 are residents and four are nonresidents. The state also reports one new death, bringing the total number of deaths to 45. The person who died was a female Anchorage resident in her 40s. Alaska has had 6,658 cumulative resident cases of COVID-19 and a total of 929 nonresidents.
