CBJ Municipal Election News 2021: Initiative Petitions in Process
When Juneau residents think of Spring, they don’t usually think of Election Season. However, for those citizens who have an interest in placing a question on the October 5, 2021 ballot, spring is the time to begin that process and the Municipal Clerk’s office has been busy processing initiative petition affidavits. To find out more, check out the links below and on CBJ’s main elections page for some of the key documents to help explain the process in more depth.
Citizen initiatives for CBJ Charter Amendments go through a slightly different process than an ballot initiative or referendum which would enact or repeal a CBJ ordinance. Click here to see the flow chart and timelines involved for each type of initiative.
As of May 3, 2021, the Municipal Clerk’s office received and approved three (3) Petitioner Committee Affidavits for the issuance of petition booklets for the following Charter Amendments:
Copies of each of the three cruise ship related Charter Amendment Affidavits are linked above. Below are copies of the letter from the Municipal Clerk to the Petitioners Committees as well as a copy of Municipal Attorney Robert Palmer’s memo to the Clerk regarding legal review.
In a separate matter, the Municipal Clerk’s Office received a Petitioner Committee Affidavit for an Initiative Petition which is currently going through the legal review process before the Clerk may approve and issue petition booklets. A copy of the affidavit as filed with the Clerk’s office on April 28, 2021 is below.
