CBJ Accessory Dwelling Unit Grants increased to $13,500

August 25, 2023 – News

The City & Borough of Juneau Assembly has approved an update to the Accessory Dwelling Unit Grant program (formerly the Accessory Apartment Grant Incentive Program, or AAG) increasing the grant amount available to homeowners and strengthening the program’s focus on creating affordable housing.

On August 21, 2023, the Assembly passed Resolution 3030(am) approving an update to the Accessory Dwelling Unit Grant program. The updated program provides homeowners with a grant of up to $13,500 for construction of a new accessory dwelling unit under the condition that the unit is not used as a short-term rental for five years.

Previously, the maximum grant amount was $6,000. Between 2015 and 2023, the program helped create 44 accessory dwelling units and granted a total of $264,000 in funding.

The complete updated application and guidelines for this program are available at juneau.org/community-development/ADUG. Please note that sixteen grants are available and applications are approved in the order they are received.

The Accessory Dwelling Unit Grant Program was created to encourage homeowners to add an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) to their home, furthering the creation of affordable housing in the community. A pilot program to provide $6,000 grants to homeowners was established in 2015 and extended for five years in 2018 as the Accessory Apartment Grant Incentive Program. The AAG ended on June 30, 2023.
