Capital Park improvements, funded partly by Juneau Community Foundation, will begin this summer

May 26, 2021 – News

Construction for the Capital School Park Improvements project is scheduled to start late this summer and extend into next summer with a target completion date of August 2022. The City and Borough of Juneau Parks & Recreation Department is slated to receive up to a $550,000 donation from the Juneau Community Foundation’s Capitol Fund toward the roughly $2 million project.

The donation will complement CBJ sales tax and bond funds to install new safety lighting, fencing, entry porticos, a picnic area, and an artificial turf field. Funding for this project included Temporary 1% Sales Tax and General Obligation Bonds approved by voters through Proposition 3 in 2020.

In addition to the improvements funded by the Juneau Community Foundation donation, the improvements project will include new ADA accessible playground equipment, safety surfacing, concrete paths through the park, art, landscaping, and an upper paved walkway with views over Juneau. In addition, two failing retaining walls and the drainage system will be replaced. Popular features of the current park – like the basketball court, upper orchard area, and the sledding hill – will remain with some clean up and improvements

Construction this season will focus on the completion of a new retaining wall, with completion of other elements this year occurring as weather conditions permit. Remaining park improvements will be completed during the 2022 construction season.
