AKDOT&PF to collect data for JDNC study within Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge starting February 13

February 9, 2024 – FYI

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) will have contractors conducting geophysical field investigations for the Juneau Douglas North Crossing PEL Study starting Tuesday, February 13 through Wednesday, February 21, 2024. Fieldwork activities are anticipated to take up to 9 days.

The geophysical data collection will be conducted at the Sunny Point West and East, Vanderbilt, and Twin Lakes alternatives (see attached figure) to evaluate feasibility and environmental impacts. Seismic refraction and resistivity data collection will involve striking a metal plate with a sledgehammer. Minor brush clearing may be required along seismic profiles and at access points for each proposed alignment. MWSGR access points and public parcels will be used by field representatives to access the Refuge.

A Special Area Permit (FH24-1-0006-SA) to conduct fieldwork within the MWSGR was issued by Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) on January 30, 2024, and consultation with federal agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and National Marine Fisheries Service has been completed.
