Assembly member Norton Gregory resigned from the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly effective August 13, 2018. His departure left a new vacancy for an Areawide seat in the October 2 Regular Municipal Election. This provided another opportunity for the public to serve the community. The Candidate Filing Period closed August 13 at 4:30 p.m.
The Areawide seat now on the ballot in the Regular Municipal Election will be a one-year term, which is the remainder of Gregory’s term. Juneau voters will also elect a mayor, two District 2 Assembly seats, a District 1 Assembly seat and three School Board seats. Residents of Downtown Juneau, Douglas, North Douglas, Lemon Creek and the Airport area are eligible to run for District 1; residents of Mendenhall Valley and out the road are eligible to run for District 2. The Mayor is an Areawide seat.
The list of certified candidates so far is posted on the Elections webpage at https://juneau.org/clerk/certified-municipal-candidates. The Clerk’s office has four days after receipt of the nominating petitions in which to certify candidacy. There has been one Mayoral petition submitted that requires additional review before certification can be made. If/when that candidate’s petition is certified, it will be posted to the certified candidate webpage linked above.
To vote in the October 2 Regular Municipal Election, you must be registered by September 2. Voters, regardless of which District they live in, will get to vote for all open seats.
