For Fire Prevention Month, CCFR emphasizes escape plan & testing smoke detectors
Capital City Fire/Rescue is joining the effort to spread awareness of fire safety and prevention. Gov. Bill Walker signed a proclamation last week declaring October 2017 as Fire Prevention Month. CCFR plans to visit several Juneau schools to talk with preschool to sixth grade students, as well as conduct fire station tours for a variety of age groups.
The National Fire Protection Association also designates this week, Oct. 8-14, as Fire Prevention Week and the theme is, “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”
“Everyone should have an escape plan and know at least two ways out of their home in case of a fire. And to take that a step further, you should practice those escape plans in the day time and night time as it can be very different at night when there is no daylight to help with visibility,” CCFR Fire Marshal Dan Jager said.
CCFR also stresses the importance of having working smoke alarms and to test them regularly; at least once a month is recommended. “Early detection alerts occupants to call 911 and get emergency responders to the scene as quickly as possible,” Jager said.
Winter is quickly approaching and CCFR reminds residents to have their chimney cleaned by a professional or to clean it themselves by borrowing cleaning equipment from the fire station. Boilers should be serviced once a year by a trained professional to ensure proper operation.
