Register by Sunday, September 1 to vote in CBJ Municipal Election

Planning to vote in the upcoming CBJ Regular Municipal Election? The last day to register to vote—or update your mailing address—before this election is Sunday, September 1. Visit voterregistration.alaska.gov to register or make an update online.

Is your 18th birthday coming up? If you will turn 18 years of age by October 1, you are eligible to vote in this election—but be aware that you still need to register by the September 1 deadline. You can register up to 90 days before your birthday.

On September 12, ballots for this election will be mailed to registered Juneau voters at the mailing address they have on file with the State of Alaska Division of Elections. If you’re not sure about your registration status or mailing address, you can check online at myvoterportal.alaska.gov.

Vote Centers will open for in-person voting starting on September 16. The last day to vote is Tuesday, October 1.

Out of town this fall? Here’s how to vote in the CBJ Municipal Election

It’s a busy election season this year—so don’t forget that the October 1, 2024 CBJ Municipal Election is just around the corner. Between September 12 and October 1, Juneau voters will make selections for Mayor, Assembly, and Board of Education, as well as vote on ballot propositions and recall petitions. CBJ regular municipal elections are conducted as by-mail elections, meaning that all registered Juneau voters automatically receive a ballot in the mail. Voters can return their ballots by postal mail or through a ballot drop box, or choose instead to vote in person at a Vote Center. Ballots will be mailed out September 12, and you can vote and return your ballot as soon as you receive it.

But what if you’re not going to be in Juneau? Don’t worry—even if you’ll be out of town during the election period, you can still cast your vote. Choose one of the following options:

Receive your ballot at another address. Fill out a temporary address application to receive your ballot at a different mailing location.

  • Return the form by Tuesday, August 27, for your temporary address to be included in the initial ballot mail-out. Applications after this date will be processed as they are received. The final deadline to submit a temporary address application is September 24.
  • Please keep in mind that ballots must be postmarked no later than October 1 and received by October 14 to be eligible for counting. If you have any doubts about this timing, consider an e-ballot.

Vote by e-ballot/fax. Fill out the e-ballot/fax application to receive a ballot by email or fax

  • The final deadline to submit an e-ballot application is 5 p.m. Alaska Time, September 30.
  • E-ballots will be sent out beginning approximately September 18.
  • Please be aware that if you receive your ballot by email you must be able to print it out. The ballot and voter certificate must be marked and signed by the voter on paper—we cannot accept ballots that have been digitally altered in any way.
  • After you have marked and signed your printed ballot packet, you can return it by email (scan or photograph), fax, or postal mail.
  • Ballots returned by email/fax must arrive by 8 p.m. Alaska Time on October 1. Ballots returned by postal mail must be postmarked by October 1 and received by October 14.

Is your voter information current for the October 1, 2024 Regular Municipal Election?

CBJ Elections are conducted as By Mail Elections. That means that all CBJ registered voters in active status with the State of Alaska Division of Elections, as of September 1, 2024 will be mailed a ballot for the October 1, 2024 Regular Municipal Election. Ballots will go in the mail on September 12 to the mailing address on file with the State of Alaska Division of Elections. Precinct polling places that are used in the State of Alaska elections will not be used during the CBJ Election. However, we will have a variety of methods by which you may return your voted ballot which include:

  • Taking them to a Vote Center (located at City Hall and the Mendenhall Public Library);
  • Dropping them in one of four official Ballot Drop Boxes (Located Douglas Public Library, Auke Bay/Statter Harbor boat launch parking lot, AEL&P, or outside City Hall); or
  • Returning your voted ballot by mail.

The deadline to register to vote or update your address for the October 1, 2024 Municipal Election is Sunday, September 1.  Register or update your address online through the State of Alaska Division of Elections or in person at: the City Clerk’s Office (City Hall, 155 Heritage Way), State of Alaska Division of Elections (9109 Mendenhall Mall Road Suite 3), or any of the Juneau Public Libraries. To check the status of your voter registration, go to the State of Alaska Division of Elections website https://myvoterportal.alaska.gov/ and follow the prompts to look up your voter registration location status. Will you be traveling during the election period and not able to receive your ballot at your regular mailing address? You can apply to have your ballot sent to a temporary address or to receive a ballot by fax or email. 2024 CBJ Temporary Address Application. Apply early! Applications received by Tuesday, August 27, will result in ballots mailed out on September 12th to the temporary address. The last day to apply to have your ballot mailed to a temporary address is Tuesday, September 24. Ballots returned through the mail must legibly postmarked no later than Election Day, October 1, 2024 and received by the Clerk’s Office no later than the start of the Canvass Review Board certification on Monday, October 14. 2024 CBJ Application for a Fax/e-ballot. Apply early! Reminder: file to run in 2024 municipal election by Monday

The 2024 City and Borough of Juneau Regular Municipal Election candidate filing period closes Monday, July 22, at 4:30 p.m. All candidate filings must be submitted in person at the Municipal Clerk’s office located on the second floor of City Hall (155 Heritage Way, Room 214).

Please note that all filing paperwork—including a nominating petition signed by 25 Juneau voters—must be complete by this time. Candidates are encouraged to review filing guidelines with the Clerk’s Office and to file as early as possible to allow time for any necessary corrections.

This fall, Juneau voters will elect a Mayor, two Assembly members and three Board of Education (School Board) members. The current list of candidates who have been certified to run is available at juneau.org/clerk/elections/clerk-certified-municipal-candidates-2024. The list is regularly updated.

The following seats are open in this election:

Mayor and Assembly

The Mayor’s seat will be open for a full three-year term. Candidates may reside anywhere in the City and Borough of Juneau.

One District 1 Assembly seat will be open for a full three-year term. Residents of Downtown Juneau, Douglas, North Douglas, Lemon Creek and the Airport area are eligible to run for District 1.

One District 2 Assembly seat will be open for a full three-year term. Residents of Mendenhall Valley and Out the Road are eligible to run for District 2.

Assembly members are term-limited to a maximum of three consecutive three-year terms, after which they must step down for a minimum of one year before they are eligible to run again for Assembly. All Juneau area voters may vote for all races on the ballot.

Board of Education

Three Board of Education seats will be open in this election. All Juneau voters may vote for up to three candidates.

Board of Education candidates may reside anywhere in the City and Borough of Juneau. There are no term limits for Board of Education members.

How to File

Candidates running for office must complete a Declaration of Candidacy, a Nominating Petition, and an Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC) Public Official Financial Disclosure form. These forms are available online at juneau.org/clerk/elections and must be filed with the CBJ Municipal Clerk’s Office during the filing period.

Declaration of Candidacy and Nominating Petition forms must be submitted to the Clerk in their original paper form (with original signatures and notarized); the Public Official Financial Disclosure form must be filed electronically on APOC’s website and a signed printed copy submitted to the Clerk. The Clerk’s Office cannot certify a candidate’s nominating petition without these three paper documents filed in the Clerk’s Office by the close of the filing period on Monday, July 22 at 4:30 p.m.

Candidates for office must meet eligibility criteria including voter registration and residency requirements. 2024 Municipal Election Candidate Filing Period Opens July 12

The 2024 City and Borough of Juneau Regular Municipal Election candidate filing period opens Friday, July 12 at 8 a.m. and closes Monday, July 22, at 4:30 p.m.

This fall, Juneau voters will elect a Mayor, two Assembly members and three Board of Education (School Board) members. Juneau residents are encouraged to consider this opportunity to serve the public and contribute to their community.

All candidate filings must be submitted in person at the Municipal Clerk’s office located on the second floor of City Hall (155 Heritage Way, Room 214). Candidates are encouraged to file as early as possible during the filing period to allow additional time to correct any insufficiencies in their paperwork.
