Capital Transit has resumed service into Downtown Juneau. Riders can once again access bus service at the Downtown Library, Franklin and Front Street, and 4th Street stops. This route is also Capital Transit’s Ride Free Zone (see the Downtown Ride Free Zone map below).
There are four bus stops in the Ride Free Zone – the Marine Parking Garage, on Franklin Street near the Gunakadeit Park (Pocket Park), on Fourth Street near Rainbow Foods and the Downtown Transit Center.
For more information call Capital Transit at 789-6901 or Transit Superintendent Ed Foster at 789-6903.
The City and Borough of Juneau Public Works Streets & Fleet Maintenance Division is in the process of performing Spring Cleanup operations to remove winter gravel and debris from the roadway, and clean out storm drain catch basins. More congested areas of the borough require scheduling, coordination and the public’s assistance in order to effectively clean.
In areas that are to be cleaned, notifications will be posted with yellow “NO PARKING” signs that are used for street maintenance operations. Streets & Fleet will try to post these notices at least one day prior to performing the work. If you see these signs in your area, please remove your vehicle from the streets during the date and time indicated to facilitate an efficient operation. This will allow Streets & Fleet to successfully clean the streets and sidewalks.
Heavy rains can prevent this work from being performed, so all operations are weather permitting. Operations will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until completion. Thank you for your patience and assistance.

The City and Borough of Juneau Public Works/Engineering Department and the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOTPF) both provide snow removal services on streets within the borough:
CBJ’s priorities for snow and ice control are set according to public safety needs (like access for emergency vehicles) and traffic volumes, with major arteries and school routes receiving attention first. CBJ performs snow removal, sanding and deicing around the clock and in the following prioritized order: 1) Main arteries and business district streets; 2) Main feeder/collector streets that lead to arterial streets and highways; and 3) Neighborhood residential streets and rural subdivisions.
Get more detail on how CBJ prioritizes snow/ice removal street by street with the CBJ Winter Road Maintenance Priority Map. The State of Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities has a similar map for state-maintained roads in Juneau.
Snow berms & sidewalks
With snow removal, CBJ’s main objective is to keep our roadways open for the safe passage of traffic. CBJ can’t eliminate berms across driveways, but operators do try to minimize the size of those berms when possible. Removal of driveway berms is the responsibility of the property owner.
CBJ maintains sidewalks in the Downtown, Lemon Creek and Mendenhall Valley business districts; on arterial roads such as Riverside Drive; on routes leading directly to schools; as well as others. Property owners are responsible for removing snow and ice on sidewalks adjacent to their properties.
