Join Olympians Scott Hamilton, Keegan Messing, and Polina Edmunds at Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer events in Juneau from September 29 – October 1

Figure skater and Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton is coming to Juneau—and he’s bringing friends. Join Hamilton on Saturday, September 30 as he hosts two special ice shows at Treadwell Arena featuring Olympians Polina Edmunds and Alaska’s Keegan Messing as part of a celebration weekend of Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer™ special events.

The Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation (CARES) has partnered with Treadwell Arena for a fundraising effort to support CARES Foundation’s cancer research and Juneau’s Cancer Connection, a grassroots non-profit organization working to assist Alaskans living with cancer. From Friday, September 29 to Sunday, October 1, Treadwell Arena will host events including adult and youth hockey, a Remembrance Walk, open skate, and celebration ice shows.

The ice shows will take place on Saturday, September 30 at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Hamilton, the 1984 Olympic men’s figure skating gold medalist, will emcee. In addition to performances from local skaters, the shows will feature 2014 Olympian Polina Edmunds and 2018 and 2022 Olympian Keegan Messing from Girdwood, Alaska. Seating is limited and guests are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance.

In addition to the ice show, the community is invited to take part in the following events:

Remembrance Walk (Presented by Southeast Radiation Oncology Center)

Open Skate (Presented by Bartlett Regional Hospital)

Sunday, October 1                  11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

All events, including the Remembrance Walk start and finish, will take place at Treadwell Arena.

Try Skating 101 on September 16 at Treadwell Arena

Treadwell Arena, Juneau-Douglas Ice Association, and Juneau Skating Club will host Skating 101 for beginners on Saturday, September 16 from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. at Treadwell Arena. The event is free and open to all ages.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like inside Treadwell Arena? Wanted to give skating a try but never found the right time? Curious what kind of classes are available or where to find gear? This is your chance to learn all about skating in Juneau!

Coaches and instructors from Juneau Skating Club and Juneau Douglas Ice Association, along with Treadwell Arena staff, will be on hand to answer questions and assist beginning skaters with trying out gear and attempting basic skills. Kids and adults are both welcome, and no registration is required—just note that gear is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Join Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton in Juneau and Raise Money for Cancer Research

Starting now, join local skaters to Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer™ and help raise money for cancer research through the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation (CARES) and Juneau’s Cancer Connection. Figure skating legend and Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton has partnered with CBJ Parks & Recreation’s Treadwell Arena for a peer-to-peer fundraising effort to support CARES Foundation’s research and Cancer Connection, a grassroots non-profit organization working to assist Alaskans living with cancer. Hamilton will travel to Juneau this September for several days of events as part of the campaign.

Funds raised will support CARES’ national research project, currently focused on pediatric glioblastoma brain tumors, as well as Cancer Connection’s travel assistance program, providing financial grants for expenses related to cancer care services outside Southeast Alaska.

We’ll celebrate our success with a fun-filled weekend of special events September 29 – October 1, including a Remembrance Walk, 3 v 3 youth hockey, adult pond hockey, open skate, and a skating show featuring local and elite skaters emceed by Scott Hamilton. Everyone in Juneau—skater or not—is invited to take part and join a community-wide effort to make a difference for those living with cancer.

Treadwell Arena To Close Out Season with Free Open Skate April 23

Treadwell Arena will celebrate the end of its 20th anniversary season with a free open skate on Sunday, April 23 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

The open skate will be Treadwell’s final event of 2022-2023. Admission and skate rentals are free of charge thanks to the generous sponsorship of Alaska Auto Repair. Please note that rental skates are limited and will be available first-come, first-served.

Treadwell Arena will remain closed for the summer due to a much-needed roof replacement. Please visit the Treadwell Arena website for roof project updates, 2023-24 reopening info, and program details.

Treadwell Arena Advisory Board Meeting Cancelled; Rescheduled to April 28

The Treadwell Arena Advisory Board (TAAB) has cancelled its upcoming meeting on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at 5:30p.m. The meeting has been rescheduled to be held on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at 5:30p.m. The Board will review a draft of the TAAB annual report at the meeting.
