Parks & Recreation offers new 5-week pickleball mixer July 18-Aug. 15

New this summer, the City and Borough of Juneau Parks & Recreation Department is offering a 5-week round-robin pickleball mixer July 18 to August 15. Games will take place 6 p.m. every Thursday evening at Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School Gym.

Pickleball is a combination of tennis, ping-pong, and racquetball. The court is smaller than for tennis so there’s less ground to cover, but it’s still great exercise. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation and is gaining popularity in Juneau.

Register as an individual and play in pairs with different partners and opponents in each round. Prizes will be awarded to the top three individuals with the most points accumulated at the end of the season; you must play a minimum of four nights to be eligible for the season prizes.

Register at the Parks & Recreation office or online to reserve your spot; there is a maximum of 16 players per night. Each night is $5 for approximately two hours of play, or play all five nights in the season for $20. Equipment is provided.

For more information, contact Parks & Recreation at 586-5226.

Juneau’s inaugural Youth Pride Party is June 20 at Zach Gordon Youth Center

The Zach Gordon Youth Center is hosting Juneau’s inaugural Youth Pride Party on Thursday, June 20 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is for middle and high school aged youth.

“At its core, Zach Gordon Youth Center is about being a safe place for all kids to come and feel welcomed and supported just as they are – seems like the perfect place to host a Pride party. While there are great youth-inclusive Pride events in Juneau, the event came about because teens had an interest in having something just for youth,” Zach Gordon Youth Center Manager Jorden Nigro said. The Zach Gordon Youth Center is part of the City and Borough of Juneau.

The June 20 event will feature a barbeque, bonfire, video games, tie dying, and door prizes. The Youth Pride Party is part of SEAGLA’s Juneau Pride 2019.

Zach Gordon Youth Center thanks event partners Juneau Teen Council, SEAGLA, AWARE, Juneau Youth Services, Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition, and Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest.
