Lifeguard Certification Courses


Class Dates & Times:  January 2nd through January 4th and January 6th, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Dimond Park Aquatic Center.

Course Cost: Class fees are $250 for general participants but FREE for those who turn in an application for the lifeguard position prior to the last day of class.

Registration: Registration opens December 13th and closes December 27th. Register online here under the Juneau Pools tab. The $250 class fee will be collected on the first day of class for those who do not plan to work for Juneau Pools.

Course Prerequisites:

  • Participants must be 15 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of the course.
  • Successfully complete the pre-course session which includes:
    • Swim/tread/swim sequence.
      • 150 yard continuous swim (front crawl/breast stroke), 2 minutes treading water, 50 yard swim
      • must be able to demonstrate proper breath control
      • must be able to swim with face in the water
      • goggles are okay for the swim portions
    • Retrieval of a brick from 10 foot depth within 1 minute 40 seconds – no goggles allowed

This course will be conducted as BLENDED LEARNING which requires an online module prior to in-class sessions. All online material must be completed and a printed course completion certificate provided to the instructor before participation in the in-person skill sessions.

Attendance at all in-class sessions is mandatory. No make-up classes will be scheduled. No refunds will be issued for missed class times.

First Aid | CPR | AED Certification Courses


Location: Dimond Park Aquatic Center – 3045 Dimond Park Loop, Juneau, AK 99801

Course Cost: $150 (Class time + Certification)

Add-on Fees (Optional): Materials Fee- $25

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant will receive an American Red Cross certification which covers First Aid/CPR and AED, valid for 2 years.

Certification courses which take place on one day will last 6-7 hours. A 30 minute lunch break will take place mid-way through the day.

*Do you have a group of 5 or more to be First Aid/CPR/AED certified and the currently scheduled classes do not fit into your schedule?*

Organized groups may schedule a privately held course at the Dimond Park Aquatic Center on a day which works best for them!

Private Course Information/Requirements:

  • Must have a minimum of 5 participants paid to confirm a course date/time
  • Must allow for a minimum of 7 hours class time
  • Must be scheduled a minimum of 3 weeks in advance
  • Regular course fees apply

Water Safety Instructor (Swim Lesson Instructors) Course


Join us to learn how to teach Red Cross swimming and water safety curriculum, and to become a certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor!  This fun and dynamic class will give you the tools and the confidence you need to teach swimming professionally, and will qualify you to work as a swimming instructor at any Red Cross affiliated aquatic facility.  Class time will be a mix of in the water and in the classroom.

Prerequisites:

  • Participants must be 15 years old by the last day of the course.
  • Pass pre-course swim test (outlined below)

Pre-course Swim Test (Required for all Participants):

  • 25 yards of: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Side Stroke, Breast Stroke, Elementary Backstroke
  • 15 yards of: Butterfly (please note that an alternate certification that does not include the butterfly is available through this course offering)
  • Maintain position on back in deep water for 1 minute (floating or sculling)
  • Tread water for 1 minute

Cost:

This course is offered free of charge to anyone who submits an application to teach swimming lessons for Juneau Pools by December 26, 2024.

For all other instructor candidates, there will be a $400 fee for this course.

  • Friday, January 3, 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Augustus Brown Pool
  • Saturday, January 4, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Augustus Brown Pool
  • Sunday, January 5, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Augustus Brown Pool
  • Monday, January 6, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Augustus Brown Pool
