With state’s travel quarantine mandate changing this week, Juneau Assembly to start discussing locally extending 14-day requirement tonight

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly will hold two public hearings at tonight’s 6 p.m. Special Meeting. One is on an emergency ordinance requiring people to quarantine when travelling into Juneau from another state or country.

This ordinance would require all people arriving in Juneau from out of state, whether resident, worker, or visitor, to self-quarantine for 14 days and monitor for COVID-19 illness. The State of Alaska Health Mandate 10 ordering travelers into Alaska to self-quarantine for 14 days is set to expire June 5, with new guidance from the state expected today. The governor has indicated that new state protocols would rely on a level of testing in lieu of quarantine. The proposed CBJ ordinance would go into effect midnight on June 4 and remain in effect through midnight June 18. The City Manager recommends the Assembly receive public comments tonight, but to continue discussion on the proposed ordinance Wednesday, June 3 during a 6 p.m. Special Meeting. The other public hearing scheduled during tonight’s Assembly Special Meeting is a resolution on the University of Alaska Southeast. The resolution states, “CBJ respectfully objects to all UAS options that would eliminate the UAS as a separate university or change its current institutional arrangement within the UA system that are described in the UA May 20, 2020 Options for University Transformation Preliminary Review Process.” Read the full resolution here.
