Due to staffing capacity, Dimond Park Aquatic Center will be open for reduced hours during the Labor Day holiday weekend on Saturday, September 2 and Monday, September 4.

DPAC Labor Day weekend hours

Saturday, September 2           9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Sunday, September 3              12 p.m. – 6 p.m. (regular hours)

Monday, September 4            12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Juneau Pools To Offer Multiple Levels of Aquatics Instructor Training in August and September

Juneau Pools will offer multiple levels of training for aspiring aquatics instructors in August and September. Courses include American Red Cross-certified Basic Swim Instructor (BSI) and Water Safety Instructor (WSI™) training, available at no cost to those applying for a swim instructor position or to the public at full price. Additionally, a Juneau Pools Parent & Tot lessons instructor training will be offered. These courses are open to any individual interested in teaching classes through Juneau Pools.

Register online by August 11 for Parent & Tot instructor classes or by August 17 for BSI and WSI™ classes.

BSI and WSI™ Instructor Training

The Basic Swim Instructor course trains instructor candidates to teach the fundamental Learn-to-Swim courses including Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-3. BSI candidates are not required to perform advanced swimming strokes and skills such as butterfly, backstroke and diving.

The Water Safety Instructor™ course trains instructor candidates to teach all courses to all age groups, including Learn-to-Swim Levels 4-6. This certification is the gold standard and provides the most comprehensive training for swim instructors. WSI™ candidates must be able to proficiently swim freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly.

Both BSI and WSI courses will consist of Zoom classes on September 7, 8, and 9, followed by in-person classes September 11-14. A detailed schedule is available in the Parks & Rec registration catalog.

Each course costs $210. This fee can be waived for individuals who have submitted an application to work as a Juneau Pools swim instructor.

Parent & Tot Lesson Instructor Training

This course trains individuals interested in teaching Parent & Tot aquatics classes at Juneau Pools. Following initial training sessions, student instructors will have the opportunity to lead lessons under the guidance of their trainer.

The course will take place at Dimond Park Aquatic Center August 14-17 and on August 19. A detailed schedule is available in the Parks & Rec registration catalog. This course is free of charge.

Juneau Pools Offering Lifeguard Hiring Bonus, Free Lifeguard Certification Class

Juneau Pools is now hiring for several full-time, benefited lifeguard positions, offering a $2,000 hiring bonus and a paid lifeguard certification course from August 11-13 at Dimond Park Aquatic Center. The course normally costs $250; successful applicants will take the course at no cost for full hourly compensation after they have been hired.

The aquatics division hosts a dynamic team environment who work cohesively together and are dedicated to making aquatic opportunities available to the community. Aquatic staff enjoy flexibility in scheduling as well as a complimentary pool pass for the employee.  

Applicants interested in the August lifeguarding class should apply through CBJ’s online job site by August 4.

Although applications are accepted on a continuous, rolling basis, those who do not already possess a valid lifeguarding certification and miss this deadline may have to wait for the next class before the hiring process can proceed.

Dimond Park Aquatic Center Lap Pool Closed July 20-21

The Dimond Park Aquatic Center (DPAC) lap pool will be closed to the public Thursday, July 20 and Friday, July 21 for tile repair. The rec pool, fitness deck, hot tub, and sauna will all remain open during the closure. You can find DPAC’s full schedule at juneaupools.org.

Registration for Summer Swim Lessons at Dimond Park Aquatic Center Opens May 30

Dimond Park Aquatic Center will offer several swim lesson sessions in June and July for preschool & youth age groups. Each session lasts two weeks long with lessons four days a week.

Registration will open Tuesday, May 30 at noon. To register, visit the Parks & Recreation online registration catalog and click on the Juneau Pools tab. Registrations will not be taken over the phone, in person, or in advance. All classes cost $64 (tax included) for 8 lessons.

Beginning this summer, swimmers must be evaluated for swimming skills by DPAC staff before they are able to register for classes at Levels 2, 3, and 4. All swimmers interested in registering for upper level classes are invited to Lessons Exposition night on Monday, May 22 at any time between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. Evaluations will take less than ten minutes per child in the pool.

Please note that swimmers who took lessons at DPAC in May 2023 do not need to attend Lessons Exposition. Children with little or no water experience should enroll in Level 1 classes and do not need to be evaluated.

Lessons are thirty minutes long and take place Monday – Thursday mornings. Classes are offered at four time slots between 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.; see the registration portal for a detailed schedule.

Session 1: June 5 – 15
Session 2: June 26 – July 6 (no class July 4)
Session 3: July 17 – 27

Preschool classes are open to children ages 3-5 and youth classes to ages 6-12. Level 1 lessons are capped at 6 swimmers per class and upper levels at 8 swimmers per class. See the Juneau Pools website for complete class level descriptions.
