On Monday, July 1, 2024, the Municipal Clerk’s office certified the Ship-Free Saturday Initiative and received the Supplemental Petition books submitted by the School Board Recall Petition Committee for the recall of School Board President Deedie Sorensen and Vice-President Emil Mackey.

Clerk staff will be reviewing the supplemental books for the recall petitions and have a final determination on sufficiency and certification no later than Thursday, July 11.

For voters who don’t know if they are a qualified Juneau registered voter or what address they are registered to vote at can check their voter registration status on the State of Alaska Division of Election’s website at https://myvoterinformation.alaska.gov/.  For individuals who are not registered to vote or who want to update their voter registration, the State Division of Elections has a webpage for that too. https://voterregistration.alaska.gov/.

Petitioner Committees for the Ship-Free Saturday Initiative and the Repeal Ordinance 2023-24 Referendum petitions were issued petition books on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 and returned the petitions on Thursday, May 30, 2024. Each petition is required to have 2,359 signatures for the Municipal Clerk’s office to certify them. In the initial round of signature review, neither the Ship-Free Saturday Initiative nor the Repeal Elections Ord. 2023-24 received a sufficient number of signatures.   For the Ship-Free Saturday Initiative Petition, Supplemental Books were turned in with a total of 424 signatures on Thursday, June 20. Clerk staff is currently reviewing signatures and will have a final decision on the sufficiency of this petition no later than Monday, July 1, 2024 (290 supplemental signatures are needed to certify the petition.)    For the Repeal Elections Ord. 2023-24 Referendum Petition, supplemental books were turned in with a total of 963 signatures on Thursday, June 20. Clerk staff is currently reviewing these supplemental books and will have a final decision on the sufficiency of this petition no later than Monday, July 1, 2024 (1391 supplemental signatures are needed to certify the petition.)    In other petition news, the two petitions to recall School Board President Deedie Sorensen and Vice-President Emil Mackey, were deemed insufficient during the first round of signature reviews and the petitioner committee was issued supplemental petition books to collect additional signatures to be turned into the Clerk’s office by Monday, July 10, 2024. Those petitions will go through a similar review and timing process as outlined above. For Deedie Sorensen, 1988 signatures were approved during the initial review; 371 additional signatures are needed in the supplemental round

For Emil Mackey, 2012 signatures were approved during the initial review; 347 additional signatures are needed in the supplemental round

Per CBJ Charter, Clerk staff has 10 calendar days in which to review all the signatures submitted and either certify a petition or deem it insufficient. In the event it is deemed insufficient, the petition committee may be issued supplemental petition books and have an additional 10 calendar days to collect supplemental signatures. Following submission of the supplemental petitions, Clerk staff will then have 10 additional days by which to certify or reject the petition.
