UPDATED: Zach Gordon Youth Center open shortened hours October 9 – November 6

The Zach Gordon Youth Center will open on a shortened schedule from Monday, October 9 through Monday, November 6 while a boiler is replaced. During this time, ZGYC will be open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will be closed on Saturdays.

Hours may be extended depending on the boiler installation process—follow ZGYC on Facebook to see the latest updates.

ZGYC will resume regular hours on Tuesday, November 7.

BAM afterschool programs will continue throughout the closure, and ZGYC staff will be available to check in with youth, provide food and other resources, and facilitate some activities.

The Shéiyi X̱aat Hit youth shelter will remain open 24 hours a day.

Registration for Parks & Recreation Start Smart Soccer opens May 4

Registration for Parks & Recreation’s Start Smart Soccer (ages 3-4) opens Wednesday, May 4, at noon. There are 25 spots available. The programs costs $35, which includes a Start Smart tee shirt. Register online (look under “Youth & Teen”) starting May 4 at noon. Registration is first come, first served. All registrations received after the session is full will be placed on a waitlist.

The Start Smart program is for ages 3-4 year olds (participants must be 3 by the first session). Start Smart Soccer sessions are held 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday, May 17-June 21, at the Juneau-Douglas High School Turf Field. Children work with an adult in their lives in a supportive environment to learn the basic skills of soccer: kicking, dribbling, trapping, and agility. Adults are active participants in the program.

Zach Gordon Youth Center recruiting for Youth Services Navigator

Zach Gordon Youth Services is recruiting for a permanent, full-time Youth Service Coordinator II/Youth Services Navigator. This position is responsible for providing outreach and support to youth who are homeless or otherwise in need of connection to services. The position comes with full benefits and pays $22.92-$24.47 depending on qualifications.
 
General shifts are 10 am-6 pm with some later evening shifts as needed Monday through Friday and some Tuesday through Saturday shifts at the Zach Gordon Youth Center downtown.

Registration for Zach Gordon Youth Center summer camps opens Monday, April 11

The City and Borough of Juneau’s Zach Gordon Youth Center is offering several different weeklong summer camps for ages 5 – 11. Online registration opens Monday, April 11, at 12 p.m. here under the “Youth & Teen” tab. Each weeklong camp costs $100-$150. Scholarships are available; learn more here and email [email protected] to register using a scholarship.

The weeklong camps have different themes that focus on art, water activities, getting outside, and exploring the Tongass National Forest. Find more detailed information here. Most of the sessions cater to 7-11 year olds. One session is for ages 5-6. Each weeklong camp has a max capacity of 13 kids.

Join CBJ as a Youth Development Leader

City and Borough of Juneau Parks & Recreation Department and Zach Gordon Youth Center Division are recruiting for a permanent full-time Youth Development Leader I to work evening and night shifts at the Shéiyi X̱aat Hít youth shelter. This position is responsible for the safety and supervision of youth during sleeping hours as well as the morning as they start the day. This includes, cooking meals, light housekeeping, helping incoming youth with paperwork and getting settled, and providing supportive counseling.
 
This position is located at the new youth shelter in the Mendenhall Valley area of Juneau. This position comes with full benefits and pays $17.65 to $20.12 hourly depending on qualifications. The work schedule for this position are 4 pm to 12 am or 12 am to 8 am. Those employees whose work schedule includes in excess of 2 continuous hours between 4 pm and midnight will receive a shift differential of $1.50 per hour. Those employees whose work schedule includes in excess of 2 continuous hours between midnight and 8 am will be paid a shift differential of $2 per hour.
