WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK ON OUR TEAM

While the Engineering & Public Works Department is one of the CBJ's largest departments, the Water Utilities unit is a small team consisting of one Senior Water Distribution Operator and five Water Distribution Operators. As a Laborer, you will be part of a team that provides essential water and wastewater service to residents, businesses, and tourists in the City & Borough of Juneau area.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position is regularly scheduled 8:00am – 4:30pm (Monday through Friday) and may be scheduled to work weekends and/or holidays. This position reports each day to the CBJ Water Utility Shop at 2520 Barrett Ave and is dispatched to various locations. Additionally, this position requires recalls for emergencies and weather events.

Job Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

Under supervision of a Senior Water, Wastewater, or WWTP Mechanic, the incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of work for the water, wastewater, or maintenance groups.

Typical responsibilities include the following:

  • Assists skilled workers in the maintenance and repair of the water or wastewater system; brushes, cleans, and paints fire hydrants; hand digs and assists in cleanup on mainlines, services, valve boxes, clean-outs, manholes, and other excavation jobs.
  • Clears areas of brush and other obstacles from facility grounds; cuts and hauls trees, brush and other vegetation; hand digs trenches, holes and pits using pick and hand shovel; fills holes on premises with asphalt, cement and other compounds; rakes, compacts, and smooth’s surfaces.
  • Landscapes and removes snow including shoveling and de-icing using chemicals and sand.
  • Assists in skilled workers in maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the buildings, structures and equipment; performs simple and rough carpentry work; paints interior and exterior structures with brushes, rollers, or spray guns; replaces light bulbs and tubes; repairing locks, doors and windows; installing floor and ceiling tiles; repairing roofing, gutters and downspouts.
  • Maintains, services, and repairs small pumps and machinery.
  • Uses hand tools; works from ladders and/or scaffolding and mechanical lift devices.
  • Pushes, pulls, lifts, carries, and stacks heavy objects. Loads and unloads trucks.
  • Assists with inventory control.
  • Under supervision of approved training program, may learn to operate light and heavy equipment.
  • Performing general clean-up in facilities including storerooms, work areas, streets and grounds.
  • Documents and files maintenance records.
  • Updates records keeping systems.
  • Participates in safety training in hazard communication, confined space entry, lockout/tagout procedures, respirator and chemical hygiene plans and electrical safety.
  • Safely operates and maintains all tools, equipment and machinery needed to perform the work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

DO I HAVE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS JOB – OUR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Other:                  Not less than 18 years of age; AND

Valid Driver’s license at time of appointment.

Position requirements may include:

Ability and willingness to work rotating shifts, holidays, weekends, scheduled and emergency overtime, and be available for required on-call duty; performing work outdoors, year round, in all weather conditions; maintaining physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include heavy lifting, walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time and operating assigned equipment and vehicles; and working under conditions that provide high exposure to the public.
