Mechanic II

Full Time 40 hours per week $31.39 - $33.52 Hourly (DOQ)

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for a certified mechanic who is able to perform all tasks related to maintaining a fleet of approximately 50 automobiles. This includes the ability to work on both gas and diesel engines.

The mechanic will need to be able to attend ongoing training for certification through in-person and online training.

The ideal applicant will be a self-starter who can follow through with performing upkeep and repairs with little oversight. The mechanic must be able to properly manage a large volume of repairs, while keeping the JPD fleet in field-ready condition.

The ideal applicant will periodically be exposed to confidential or sensitive material and must be able to maintain strict confidentiality and integrity.

The JPD Mechanic II will be a valued member of our team and will be able to guide the future of our vehicle fleet. While the JPD Mechanic II will spend a considerable amount of time alone working on maintenance and repairs, the mechanic will have daily interactions with JPD staff and the public.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position works (Monday through Friday) 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Your workspace would be split between time spent at the Juneau Police Department in the Lemon Creek area, and some time spent at the Downtown Fire Station.

Job Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

The JPD Mechanic is responsible for the following:

  • Ensure that all automobiles in the JPD fleet are maintained in good working order.
  • Conduct routine maintenance on JPD-owned automobiles, including oil changes, brake repairs, tire swaps, warranty work, etc.
  • Coordinate major repairs for all JPD-owned automobiles, including mechanical and auto body work.
  • Maintain an inventory of parts and supplies to conduct maintenance of JPD automobiles.
  • Maintain computer records of all fleet maintenance records and repairs.
  • Order new vehicles for the JPD fleet.
  • Coordinate and outfit new JPD vehicles.
  • Decommission and sell used JPD vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:         Three (3) years of experience in automotive, construction/heavy equipment, truck, or transit bus repair and maintenance as appropriate to specific position.

Substitution:      Post-secondary education or technical training in automotive work may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 125 clock hours of instruction for one month of experience up to a maximum of twenty‑four months.

Other:

  • Must provide and maintain own set of hand tools.
  • Requires a valid Alaska Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment.

SPECIAL NOTE:  Appointment to Police Mechanic II positions will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of the background process which includes a criminal background review*, fingerprinting*, investigative interview*, and receipt of verified negative results of pre-employment testing for controlled substances (this includes new hires, short term temp, long term temp, transfers from another CBJ department, or former JPD employees who have been separated from JPD employment for more than 30 days). All information provided by the applicant will be verified.  Applicants who materially misrepresent any information provided in the employment process will be excluded from consideration or dismissed if already employed. *New JPD employees only.

APSIN Clearance
Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN).  A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN or to be working around APSIN information.  DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice.  Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance. 

With written consent (see attached supplemental document), a criminal history report will be obtained prior to any testing or interviews in order to evaluate a candidate’s suitability in obtaining an APSIN clearance.

Department Requirements   

Ability and willingness to occasionally work shifts, holidays, weekends, scheduled and emergency overtime, attend local and out of area training courses as authorized and required; maintain minimum unscheduled absences and a high rate of attendance; maintain a positive attitude and be flexible to change.

Although marijuana usage is legal in Alaska, such drug use is not federally legal nor is its use allowed per departmental policy.  Furthermore, an applicant with marijuana use within the past one (1) year will be automatically disqualified.
