Investigations Support Specialist

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK ON OUR TEAM
As an Investigations Support Specialist for the Juneau Police Department, you will be a member of a multi-jurisdictional drug task force for southeast Alaska. This position will enjoy numerous training opportunities, impactful work with real-time results, and the ability to establish partnerships and working relationships throughout Alaska's law enforcement community, and other state, local, and federal departments. JPD has a strong friendly atmosphere while maintaining professionalism. JPD offers a fitness room and is centrally located in Lemon Creek with free off-street parking.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position works Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Your office would be located at the Juneau Police Department in the Lemon Creek area.

 

Job Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

This position works under the general direction of the Drug Enforcement Unit Sergeant and provides specialized administrative and paraprofessional support to the Juneau Police Department Special Operations Unit and the SEACAD drug task force (Southeast Alaska Communities Against Drugs). This is a very busy position that will regularly require you to work shifts and during emergency situations, while occasionally being required to work weekends and holidays while performing the following duties:

  • Serves as a subject matter expert who accesses a range of public, law enforcement, and classified information systems and databases to perform the investigation, compilation, verification, analysis, development, and dissemination of strategic and/or tactical intelligence support related to the activities of suspected and known criminals
  • Researches and identifies intelligence information for patterns and activities relating to drug activity, white-collar crimes, narcotics, money laundering, gangs, and auto theft rings; prepares comprehensive reports, time flow, link, analytical charges, and presentations to illustrate and clarify the information obtained.
  • De-conflicts targets and planned operations by notifying fusion centers and involved agencies of possible conflict.
  • Maintains confidential informant files.
  • Routes confidential records to the appropriate prosecutor's office; prepares legal documents and collects information for court orders.
  • May provide pat down searches of same-sex subjects. When no other alternative is feasible, may conduct strip searches of same-sex undercover operatives before and after drug transactions.
  • May be called to testify in court proceedings.
  • Compiles drug case statistics for monthly and annual reporting requirements.
  • Maintains and edits unit records including monthly and annual reports, ledgers, funds received and dispersed, current fund balances, plus reconciles purchases.
  • Conducts travel arrangements for SEACAD task force members.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate clearances to access local, state, and national criminal intelligence systems and confidential databases.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:          Graduation from high school or the equivalent; AND

Experience:         One year of experience working with criminal intelligence using computer applications to gather, compile,

                        analyze data, identify and report trends based on research.

OR                         Two years of experience performing any kind of research, developing reports, and identifying trends or interpreting data from multiple sources to develop conclusions or recommendations.

OR                         An Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Statistics, or a closely related field that included coursework directly related to the primary duties.

Other:   Not less than 18 years of age

Special Requirements: Requires Notary Public Commission (to be provided by employer).

NOTE: All applicants are subject to an extensive background investigation to determine suitability for police support work and the maintenance of confidential records. Appointment to the position will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of the background process which includes a psychological examination, criminal background review, fingerprinting, investigative interview, and receipt of verified negative results of pre-employment testing for controlled substances (this includes: new hires, short term temp, long term temp, transfers from another CBJ department, or former JPD employees who have been separated from JPD employment for more than 30 days). All information provided by the applicant will be verified. Applicants who materially misrepresent any information provided in the employment process will be excluded from consideration or dismissed if already employed.

Although marijuana usage is legal in Alaska, such drug use is not federally legal nor is its use allowed per departmental policy.  Furthermore, an applicant with marijuana use within the past one (1) year will be automatically disqualified.

APSIN NOTIFICATION
Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN).  With written consent (see supplemental document), a criminal history report will be obtained prior to any testing or interviews in order to evaluate a candidate’s suitability in obtaining an APSIN clearance. A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN.  DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice.  Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.

Department Requirements:   Ability and willingness to work shifts, holidays, weekends, scheduled and emergency overtime, and be available for required on-call duty; attend local and out-of-area training courses as authorized and required; willingness to comply with department grooming standards; maintain minimum unscheduled absences and a high rate of attendance; maintain a positive attitude and be flexible to change.
