Accounting Technician I (Assistant Revenue Collector)

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK ON OUR TEAM

The Collections office is a two person team within the Finance Department, Treasury Division, located in City Hall in downtown Juneau. You will work closely with the Revenue Collector to recoup delinquent balances for all CBJ departments that require collections services. We strive to compassionately work with our members of the public who may be struggling in a number of areas to get back in good standing with their CBJ accounts. Collections staff is friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and always willing to answer inquiries in a timely fashion. The collections office is a challenging environment that serves the public as well as CBJ departments; good customer service is always first and foremost.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position works (Monday through Friday) 8am – 4:30pm. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau in City Hall. A parking pass or bus pass will be provided.

Job Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

The purpose of this position is to be the initial contact for the Revenue Collections office, assist the Revenue Collector, and CBJ departments with collecting past due debts. The primary duties are to actively listen, and clearly, and compassionately communicate with customers in person, phone, and via email; providing payment and delinquent balance information, as well as field a wide array of inquiries. Maintain comprehensive notes on all customer accounts and communications. Perform vendor good standing verifications, generate collection letters, initiate and track payment agreements, and maintain and reconcile spreadsheets. File and release liens electronically. Calculate interest and penalties, pre and post judgment interest and fees. Prepare small claim writs and PFD garnishment legal form documents, file satisfaction of judgments. Submit court forms and documents to the State of Alaska court system. Monthly run the water shutoff process. Assign accounts for bad debt, legal action, or 3rd party collection. Disburse collected funds. Notarize collection documents. Research customer contact information for collection purposes. Research misapplied payments. Prepare check requests for overpayments and customer refunds. Work with a process server for service of legal documents.

Minimum Qualifications

DO I HAVE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS JOB – OUR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:           High School graduation or the equivalent.

Experience:         One (1) year of clerical accounting related experience which includes financial data entry and reconciliation.

Substitution:       Two (2) business related courses from an accredited college may substitute for six (6) months of the experience on the basis of 3 semester/4 quarter hours per class.*
