WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
The Juneau Public Libraries have three branches: the downtown Juneau Public Library (located atop the Marine Parking Garage on the waterfront), the Mendenhall Valley Public Library (located in Dimond Park), and the Douglas Public Library (located in the Douglas Community Building, a shared facility with the Fire Department). Library staff offices are located at the downtown branch. The libraries are open 7 days a week.
This position works primarily at the downtown library, M-F with weekly evening and occasional weekend shifts.
Job Responsibilities
DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
This position performs difficult and complex technical library tasks based upon extensive knowledge of the Alaska Library Extension Program. The incumbent of this position performs difficult and more complex technical and clerical support tasks for the Library Extension program and acts as an assistant to professional Librarians. Typical responsibilities include the following:
- First line of supervision of positions that perform less difficult and complex technical and clerical support tasks.
- Scheduling and coordination of Assistant Library Technicians for off-desk responsibilities.
- Provides main point of contact for mailing or post office issues for mail services routing.
- With direction, compiles and generates statistical reports for grant compliance and internal tracking using queries in the integrated library system and information in excel spreadsheets.
- Assists in providing library services by mail to individuals living in communities without public libraries.
- Compiles, formats, and presents a variety of statistics for grant compliance.
- Sorts incoming mail for the Mail Services program. Operates online circulation system to check books in and out.
- Assists in ordering books for paperback Library Extension collection. Enters records for new books on database, affixes barcodes, and deletes old records.
- May prepare catalog/lists of Library Extension items that are available for check out through the program.
- Reviews patron files to determine needs for continuing service. Contacts patrons with long overdue materials or those who have not had recent service. Sends introductory materials to new and potential participants. Registers new patrons.
- May assist in updating Alaska Library Extension web pages as needed.
- Assists technical services in a variety of areas including mending library materials, processing new materials, and deleting and recycling old and worn items.
- May assist with Cash Control duties that include cash register close out, reconciliation, and transmittal preparation.
- Works regularly scheduled and occasional relief shifts at the library public service desks.
- Performs other related duties as required.
This position provides specialized technical library support and covers both circulation and reference responsibilities. This position frequently uses the library databases and electronic catalog, and assists patrons in the use of library services, materials and facilities. This position will assist patrons in a variety of ways including locating materials, assisting with the use of library equipment and wireless internet, and taking payment for fees. This position also performs public service duties such as registering voters, and selling bus passes and tokens. This position is also responsible for closing and securing library facilities.
Library staff explain and enforce library rules and employ considerable independent judgement to correct inappropriate conduct including situations with patrons who may be experiencing substance abuse or mental health issues and are potentially violent.
Note: This is a grant funded position and is dependent upon a grant from the State of Alaska that the library applies for annually.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in a library or bookstore OR related experience requiring technical skills in the use of library materials.
SUBSTITUTION: Post-secondary education in any academic discipline from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 2.5 semester hours (3.75 quarter hours) for one month of experience up to a maximum of 1 year of experience. This equates to 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours = 12 months experience.
Other: Employee must have access to reliable transportation to transport self to Library branches.
