Groundskeeper Assistant

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Applicants need to have some experience in landscape maintenance beyond mowing and leaf blowing. We are looking for someone who has a good understanding of gardening in Alaska, and preferably gardening in Southeast—with horticultural plants and indigenous plants. Knowing plant names, proper trimming and planting techniques, soil health, identifying water needs or pest and disease issues will be of value. Applications should be comfortable speaking to arboretum visitors whether about gardening or safety.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK ON OUR TEAM
A team of three CBJ employees with a curiosity and passion for nature work closely to maintain the grounds of the arboretum. This beautiful setting on a quiet cove, with a view of the Inside Passage, surrounded by unusual varieties and colors of plants, can be idyllic. It is Out the Road, but once at work, watching the garden progress is a reward.
WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position works Wednesday – Sunday, 9:00am – 5:00pm, work location is at the Jensen-Olson Arboretum, 23035 Glacier Hwy, Juneau.
Job Responsibilities
DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
The Groundskeeper Assistant, under direct supervision of the Arboretum Manager, performs a variety of duties in an outdoor environment relating to the CBJ-maintained Jensen-Olson Arboretum to maintain high standards of garden maintenance and visitor services.
Landscaping duties include planting, seeding, watering, pruning, weeding, transplanting, harvesting, raking, applying compost tea, monitoring plant health, and interacting with visitors. The Groundskeeper Assistant may assist with garden bed renovation by mixing soil and/or moving gravel. The Groundskeeper Assistant will be required to use hand tools such as clippers, pruners, trowels, rakes, and shovels. Use of power tools and pickup truck may be necessary.
As a demonstration garden and historic site, the Groundskeeper Assistant should be prepared to interact with visitors to provide educational information. This is a garden maintenance job, most work will be done outside in various types of weather. An enclosed, heated breakroom is provided. The Groundskeeper Assistant should be prepared to assist the Manager to mitigate visitor and wildlife interactions.
Minimum Qualifications

OTHER: Not less than 18 years of age; AND
A valid Driver's License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Education and/or experience in horticulture desires.
