WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

The CCFR provides 24/7 emergency response for the City & Borough of Juneau. All permanent full time positions work 24 hour shifts and live at the station during their shift. Permanent full time seasonal positions work a 42 hour work week and do not live at the station during shift. Seasonal positions generally work from spring to fall. The CCFR has two live-in stations, the Juneau station located in downtown Juneau, and the Glacier station located near the Juneau International Airport. In addition, we have Douglas, Auke Bay and Lynn Canal Stations. 

Job Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

FF/EMT’s respond quickly to a variety of emergency situations and perform rescue activities. They extinguish firesand render emergency medical care and assistance to those in need or in crisis.

FF/EMT’s search and rescue people from fires and other emergencies, which may involve carrying children, injured, infirm, or frightened people from burning buildings; locate and dig out people trapped in tunnels, pipes, or excavations; rescue people trapped on cliffs, ledges, etc.; perform water or ice rescues; and, evacuate people from hazardous spills/areas of contamination by chemicals, gas, etc.

Our personnel must respond quickly to alarms/pagers, be able to put on protective clothing rapidly, and load necessary equipment to the apparatus.

Assesses properties on fire, such as smell and color of smoke, to determine what is burning and what equipment and extinguishing agents to use and what protective gear to wear; assesses effects of weather, wind, humidity, and other conditions on the fire; assesses best route for evacuation and access to the fire scene; and relays information to responding firefighters.

Listens, relays, and follows the verbal orders of Fire Chief/Incident Commander at the scene.

Evaluates whether entry of burning structure is feasible; forces open doors, windows, or gates; and breaks or cuts into walls, roofs, or fences to gain access to fire or to search area.

Checks, operates, and maintains generators, air compressors, breathing apparatus, light plants, rescue equipment, and other specialized firefighting/rescue equipment and tools. Maintains records and prepares reports on equipment test, usage, and fire and ambulance incidents.

Operates ambulance and other related emergency equipment. Assesses general condition of injured individual by noting vital signs, pupil dilation, respiration, skin temperature, alertness, and mental orientation.

Administers necessary basic first aid and emergency care to stabilize a patient for transport; administers CPR; administers intravenous fluids and medications to patient on instruction from medical personnel; checks victims at scene for medic alert symbols or emblems; and transports patient to ambulance or emergency vehicle with special care to avoid further injury.

Aircraft firefighting and rescue duties, including airport specific response procedures under the Federal Aviation Administration and other applicable state or federal regulations. If assigned, may be required to drive ARFF apparatus.

May be required to travel in aircraft and watercraft to provide emergency medical services. When properly trained, may be required to respond to and perform specialized skills in technical rescue responses such as hazmat, rope, or confined space.

Participates in required training to maintain and enhance firefighting and emergency medical knowledge and skill; attends classes in first aid, emergency medical techniques, firefighting, equipment, etc.; learns and practices new methods; and participates in drills.

Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

DO I HAVE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS JOB – OUR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

All levels:

Education:           High School graduation or a valid GED certificate.

Other:                   Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment.

A valid Driver's License at time of appointment and for continued employment.

Certification (s): Certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter I or an equivalent certification as determined

by the Fire Chief at time of appointment.

Specific Level Requirements:

FIREFIGHTE-EMT I:

At time of appointment either:

  1. Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician I;
  2. OR
  1. Certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) (as appropriate to the position), however, applicants must obtain State of Alaska EMT certification prior to appointment.

FIREFIGHTE-EMT II:

At time of appointment either:

  1. Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician II;
  2. OR
  1. Certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), additional training and education may be necessary to qualify as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician-III (as appropriate to the position), however, applicants must obtain State of Alaska EMT certification prior to appointment.

FIREFIGHTE-EMT III:

At time of appointment either:

  1. Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician III;
  2. OR
  1. Certification with the National Registry of Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), additional training and education may qualify (as appropriate to the position), however, applicants must obtain State of Alaska EMT certification prior to appointment.

NOTE: Appointment to a Firefighter – EMT I-III position will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of the psychological assessment and the medical evaluation.

Continued employment and advancement opportunities:

Continued employment requires completion of the on-the-job training program, meeting or exceeding performance standards, and the following conditions:

Employees who are hired with or achieve any EMT certification must continue to maintain that EMS certification as a                 condition of continued employment.

TESTING SCHEDULE

Testing dates and an exam schedule have been established. Testing locations and a testing schedule will be posted on the Human Resources’ web page at a later date. 

EXAMINATION

All applicants, including Juneau residents, must go through the registration and pass the written examination with Public Safety Testing in addition to applying with the CBJ Human Resources & Risk Management Department.
