COVID-19 Communications Assistant

Short Term / Intern Temp 37.5 hours per week $22.69 per hour

The City & Borough of Juneau is recruiting for a Communications Assistant to work alongside the Public Information Officer. The position will help develop messaging around COVID-19 and the COVID-19 vaccine, as well as support CBJ’s general public information duties. Job Responsibilities

What you will be doing:

  • Create and repurpose content for social media and CBJ website
  • Assist in writing Information Releases and Public Service Announcements
  • Manage and monitor CBJ social media accounts and help communicate directly with the public
  • Monitor websites and social media accounts of national and state entities responding to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Monitor local and statewide news sites, CBJ department social media accounts, and other local social media to keep a pulse on what’s new, interesting, and relevant
  • Take photos for website and social media
  • Other duties as assigned

 

We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Can write well in a formal and casual manner
  • Proficient in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, NextDoor; savvy in at least two of them.
  • Aptitude for photography and ability to drive around town to take photos
  • Organized and has an eye for detail
  • Able to think critically and offer content suggestions
  • Able to take notes and cold call people
  • Has an interest in local city issues

 

Additional desired skills, not required:

  • Able to shoot and edit video
  • Can designs posters and fliers
  • Knowledgeable in WordPress

 

When you will be working:

This position works approximately 37.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (flexible start and end times) with potential weekend and evening duties.

 

Where you will be working:

The position is located in City Hall. Parking will be provided.

 

*This is a temporary, non-benefitted, hourly position.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:      High School Degree or equivalent.

Experience: Any combination of experience or post-secondary education totaling one (1) year that included: Paid or unpaid experience (including volunteers/interns) performing work directly related to the assigned scope of work.

 

  • Qualifying experience examples include, but not limited to: developing, editing, or finalizing websites, social media, or related communications.
  • Qualifying education examples include, but not limited to: coursework or a degree in the liberal arts, English literature, creative writing, journalism, communications, or similar field.

 

Writing Sample: Applicants must submit an original writing sample with their application to be considered.

 

Note: Applicant must provide documentation to support how their prior experience and/or post-secondary education meet the knowledge, skills, and experience outlined in the recruitment announcement. Applicants may not be considered if their application does not provide supporting documentation (ie. transcripts, samples of work, resume) or does not provide enough detail.

CBJ Human Resources will determine whether an applicant's post-secondary education is considered applicable to the requirements of the position. Applicants using post-secondary education may qualify on the basis of 3 semester or 4 quarter school credits equating to one (1) month of experience.

SPECIAL NOTE:  This is an hourly temporary emergency position created to for the sole purpose of responding to the COVID-19 Public Health emergency. In accordance with City & Borough of Juneau Personnel Rule 5 PR 010. “Emergency Appointment” of these type of positions do not qualify for health or life insurance, leave or holiday pay. An emergency appointment may not exceed the duration of the emergency.
