Network Specialist I

Full Time 40 Hours per week $31.46 Hourly

Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, performs journey-level technical tasks to support the missions of the Juneau Police and Fire Departments. Infrastructure and systems supported include servers, microwave links, desktop computers, mobile computers, body worn cameras, databases, VoIP phones, wireless devices, and building security systems.

 

Typical responsibilities may include the following:

  • Monitoring systems, security alerts, storage, backups, and network performance
  • Providing end user support with software and hardware
  • Troubleshooting and resolving day-to-day technical issues
  • Creating end user accounts, assigning and managing access and security
  • Performing routine diagnostics, installations and configurations of hardware, software, and systems
  • Building, deploying, configuring, and maintaining workstations, laptops, and other equipment; installing equipment, such as, in-car video, mobile data terminals, and security/cameras
  • Troubleshooting issues with software integrations
  • Assisting with installation and monitoring of public safety radio equipment
  • Assisting senior level positions or technical teams with custom or highly complex integrations, upgrades, large equipment roll-outs; and resolving issues involving multiple departments or systems.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:     One (1) year of technical experience in computer or telecommunications support that included network                                     maintenance and troubleshooting duties.

Substitution:     Two (2) years of post-secondary education from an accredited college with a major in Computer Science, Computer Networking, Information Systems or closely related field will substitute for the required experience.

Other:               Valid Alaska Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment.

Special Notes

NOTE:             As part of the selection process, applicants are subject to a background investigation that includes a                                     criminal background review, fingerprinting, investigative review and receipt of verified negative                                               results of pre-employment testing for controlled substances. All information provided by the applicant                                  will be verified. Applicants who materially misrepresent any information provided in the employment                                    process will be excluded from further consideration or dismissed if already employed.

 

SPECIAL NOTE: Although marijuana usage is legal in Alaska, such drug use is not federally legal nor is its use allowed per departmental policy.  Furthermore, an applicant with marijuana use in the past one (1) year will be automatically disqualified.

 

APSIN NOTIFICATION
This position requires access to the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN).  A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN.  DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice.  Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.

 

With written consent (see attached supplemental document), a criminal history report will be obtained prior to any testing or interviews in order to evaluate a candidate’s suitability in obtaining an APSIN clearance.
