Senior Ski Patroller

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for people who have the ability to: ski at an expert level; plan, lead and train individuals in the use of a variety of the techniques and equipment specified; perform search and rescue activities independently or as a leader; maintain a high level of independent judgment under stress; think clearly and quickly and communicate ideas concisely and persuasively; interpret manuals, policies and apply information as needed; prepare written reports, work effectively under difficult physical and environmental conditions; coordinate activities with other leads, supervisors, and non-ski patrol staff; ski in difficult terrain with loaded back pack; interpret weather data and maintain records; handle explosives with safety and discretion; operate snow vehicles and other equipment when circumstances require it; direct, train, and motivate others.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK ON OUR TEAM AS SENIOR SKI PATROL

Being a Senior Ski Patrol will candidates to take their previous training to the next level leading and training lower level Ski Patrol in the complexities of avalanche control and snow safety assessment as well as other complex parts of the job.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This positions works Wednesday through Sunday 8:00am-4:30pm during the normal operating season of Eaglecrest Ski Area. The position also works all school holidays to match the Eaglecrest Operating Schedule. During avalanche control mornings, the position will be required to start the shift as early as 6:30am.

 

 

Job Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

This is the senior level job class for the Ski Patrol Series.  Under general direction of the Director of Snow Safety or Ski Patrol Manager, performs the full range of ski patrol duties at an expert level and proficient in the Eaglecrest avalanche hazard reduction program procedures. At this level, incumbents are qualified to lead at least four (4) of the six (6) avalanche mitigation routes and function as a “team leader” on avalanche hazard reduction missions and have been trained to independently use controlled explosions to reduce avalanche risks.  Lead training of lower level ski patrollers.

Care and operation of a variety of safety/rescue apparatus; principles of weather instrumentation and data gathering; general cause and effect of weather variables and their impact on avalanching; use, handling, firing and storage of explosives; cold weather safety and survival techniques as well as techniques of supervision are required.

Minimum Qualifications

DO I HAVE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS JOB – OUR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:                         Two (2) seasons as a journey level Ski Patroller at Eaglecrest Ski Area.

Or                                            Two (2) seasons as a Ski Patroller at another ski area with an avalanche hazard reduction program and one (1) season as a journey level Ski Patroller at Eaglecrest Ski Area.

Note: A Season is defined as 3 months of full-time work.

License/Certification:       Valid Alaska EMT-1 or Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC-National Ski Patrol) medical certification at time of appointment and for continued employment; AND

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Professionals certification within one month of hire and for continued employment.

State of Alaska EMT certification is preferred.

Special Requirements:    At least 18 years of age at time of appointment

(8 AAC 61.1020 (a2))

Must demonstrate proficiency as an expert skier and ability to ski and navigate all terrain at Eaglecrest regardless of conditions; demonstrate knowledge of all Eaglecrest avalanche hazard reduction program procedures; and ability to lead at least four (4) of the six (6) avalanche hazard reduction routes.

Appointment and continued employment is contingent on ability to pass an Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms  and  Explosives (ATFE) background check and obtain “Employee Possessor Clearance” (to work with explosives).

Applicable Statutes: Sec. 08.52.035. Criminal justice information and records. AS 12.62.160 for criminal justice information and a national criminal history record check. The Department of Public Safety may submit the fingerprints to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a national criminal history record check. The department shall use the information obtained under this section in its determination of an applicant's qualification for issuance or renewal of a certificate of fitness.

 

Candidate must be able to work outside in severe weather conditions and at heights of 75’ above ground and be able to lift ~75lbs. unassisted and heavier weights with assistance.

 

Employees will receive an offer (non-required) for the Hepatitis B Vaccination series due to potential exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Employees may not work with or provide medical treatment to customers without documentation to support vaccination or a completed waiver form.
