Computer Support Specialist III

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for a patient and friendly problem solver, who is comfortable working in a technical field where troubleshooting and urgent help requests are an everyday occurrence. We are looking for someone with experience in stripping down and assembling computer related hardware, troubleshooting and identifying problems and solutions with basic software, and who has good written communication skills to pass on that information to others who may not be familiar with the details. We are looking for someone to provide advanced support, advice, and guidance to the Computer Support Specialist II positions. We are looking for someone to maintain and repair old equipment, and to be the one to go out to different departments and install or arrange new equipment. We are looking for someone reliable and consistent who can work independently, but will help with the team when needed. This position is one of the front facing conduits that IT has with the rest of CBJ, and you will be working closely with all of the departments spread through the Borough, so good people skills are also very important.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK IN OUR DEPARTMENT
We are a relatively small department within CBJ, but our duties and responsibilities are extremely important for the day to day operation of CBJ as a whole. Our crew are all friendly and capable people, with an interest in making things as smooth as possible for our organization. We’re all supportive and intuitive, and working with IT is a great career path for those interested in the practical application of technology.
WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position typically works a 7.5 hour day (Monday through Friday). Your start and finish times will be determined on start date but will be between 7:30am – 8:30am and your finish time will match accordingly between 4:00pm and 5:00pm. Your office is located in downtown Juneau in City Hall.
Job Responsibilities
DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Under direction, Computer Support Specialist III is a non-supervisory advanced technical specialist responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and use of application software, operating systems, and hardware. This position assists the Computer Support Specialist II positions in troubleshooting more complex helpdesk requests and desktop issues that may require research and advance knowledge in order to resolve issues. This position also identifies, researches, and assists higher level network professionals to resolve network related problems involving network hardware, computer hardware, software, and/or application systems.
This position responds to routine advanced helpdesk requests by telephone and email; review technical manuals, confer with users, or conduct computer diagnostics to investigate and resolve problems or to provide technical assistance and support. The CSIII assists and mentors other computer support positions in the development of systems, implementation of computer technologies, and troubleshooting of technologies and assists in basic network troubleshooting, device configurations, and cabling standards. This position installs, configures, and maintains hardware and software on workstations; troubleshoots network connectivity, service availability, and issues with mobile devices; troubleshoots major hardware or software problems, security, and access issues. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in customer service and support of computing systems and computing environments, specifically, providing instruction on and/or performing maintenance on computer hardware, software, networking device installation and setup; assisting with server management; or supporting network services on servers in an environment that required familiarity with a variety of applications and functions.
Substitution: Two (2) years of post-secondary education with a major in Computer Science, Networking, or Management Information Systems may substitute for one (1) year of experience. 2.5 semester hours or 3.75 quarter hours of education is equivalent to one month of experience.
One or more industry recognized desktop, operating system or infrastructure certifications such as A+, Net+, Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician, CCNA or related may substitute for the required experience.
Other: Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
Special Notes
APSIN
Please be aware – this position works directly with CBJ systems that may include assistance with a department’s Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). This requires the incumbent to submit to a pre-employment fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with adult criminal convictions will not move forward in the recruitment and selection process. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance. Final offer of employment is contingent on obtaining DPS security clearance.
