WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
The CCFR provides 24/7 emergency response for the City & Borough of Juneau. Permanent full-time seasonal positions work a 42-hour work week and do not live at the station during shift. Shift hours would fall between 8 am – 8 pm. Seasonal positions generally work from spring to fall. The CCFR has two live-in stations, the Juneau Station located in downtown Juneau, and the Glacier Station located near the Juneau International Airport. In addition, we have Douglas, Auke Bay and Lynn Canal Stations.
Job Responsibilities
DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Firefighter-EMT’s respond quickly to a variety of emergency situations and perform rescue activities. They extinguish fires and render emergency medical care and assistance to those in need or crisis.
Firefighter-EMTs operate the ambulance and other related emergency equipment. Assesses the general condition of the injured individual by noting vital signs, pupil dilation, respiration, skin temperature, alertness, and mental orientation.
They administer necessary emergency medical care to stabilize a patient for transport; administer CPR; administer intravenous fluids and medications to the patient on instruction from medical personnel; check victims at the scene for medic alert symbols or emblems; and transport patient(s) to ambulance or emergency vehicle with special care to avoid further injury.
Firefighter-EMTs search and rescue people from fires and other emergencies, which may involve carrying children, injured, infirm, or frightened people from burning buildings; locate, and dig out people trapped in tunnels, pipes, or excavations; rescue people trapped on cliffs, ledges, etc.; perform water or ice rescues; and, evacuate people from hazardous spills and areas of contamination by chemicals, gas, etc.
Our personnel must respond quickly to alarms and pagers, be able to put on protective clothing rapidly, and load necessary equipment to the apparatus.
Listens, relays, and follows the verbal orders of the Fire Chief/Incident Commander at the scene.
Checks, operates, and maintains generators, air compressors, breathing apparatus, light plants, rescue equipment, and other specialized firefighting/rescue equipment and tools. Maintains records and prepares reports on equipment tests, usage, and fire and ambulance incidents.
May be required to travel in aircraft and watercraft to provide emergency medical services. When properly trained, may be required to respond to and perform specialized skills in technical rescue responses such as hazmat, rope, or confined space.
Participates in required training to maintain and enhance firefighting and emergency medical knowledge and skill; attends classes in first aid, emergency medical techniques, firefighting, equipment, etc.; learns and practices new methods; and participates in drills.
Deals with the public in emergency and normal day-to-day operations, professionally providing education and services related to their duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Firefighter-Trainee EMT I Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School graduation or a valid GED certificate.
Other: Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment.
A valid Alaska Driver's License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
Certification(s): Certification by the State of Alaska as an Emergency Medical Technician I or higher at time of appointment and for continued employment
Certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter within eighteen (18) months of appointment.
Note: Appointment to a Firefighter Trainee EMT position will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of the psychological assessment, and the medical evaluation.
Firefighter EMT I Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School graduation or a valid GED certificate.
Other: Not less than 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
A valid Alaska Driver's License at the time of appointment and for continued employment.
Certification (s): Certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter I or an equivalent certification as determined by the Fire Chief at time of appointment.
Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician I or higher.
NOTE: Appointment to a Firefighter EMT position will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of the psychological assessment, CPAT, and medical evaluation.
Continued employment and advancement opportunities:
Continued employment requires completion of the on-the-job training program, meeting or exceeding performance standards, and the following conditions:
EMT I: Within twelve (12) months of appointment, full-time employees must obtain and maintain certification as a State of Alaska EMT II.

NOTE TO APPLICANTS
This recruitment will be used to create an eligible list to fill future vacancies, which may occur within the next twelve months, subject to an interview and re-evaluation of the candidate’s current job performance. At the discretion of the Fire Chief, the eligible list may be extended up to one year from the effective date. The City and Borough of Juneau may revise or change the examinations or examining procedure at any time during the period, and require candidates to meet the revised examination procedures, or pass the revised examinations to maintain eligibility for appointment.

All applicants, including Juneau residents, must go through the registration and pass the written examination with Public Safety Testing in addition to applying with the CBJ Human Resources & Risk Management Department.
