Harbor Technician (Full-Time Seasonal)

Full Time Seasonal 37.5 hours per week $21.23 Hourly

    • Ability to interpret and implement applicable sections of 33 CFR Part 105 as they apply to the department’s Facility Security Plans (FSP);

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position works five days per week, shift times are dependent upon harbor or port operations tempo. Your work location will be downtown at the Port of Juneau or Statter Harbor in Auke Bay.

Job Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

The Harbor Technician is an entry level position that performs routine tasks to assist Harbor Officers with the operation, maintenance, and management of the City and Borough of Juneau’s harbors and associated facilities. Positions in this class perform routine, unskilled and semi-skilled work under close supervision. Their duties are primarily concerned with maintenance, custodial work and basic office support. Additionally, Harbor Technicians assist Harbor Officers with security and vendor and loading zone enforcement by conducting routine identification checks and patrols and reporting their findings to their supervisor. Supervisors define the work assignments, regularly monitor work progress, and provide specific instruction and feedback

Positions in this class perform routine, unskilled and semi-skilled work under close supervision. Their duties are primarily concerned with maintenance, custodial work and basic office support. Additionally, Harbor Technicians assist Harbor Officers with security and vendor and loading zone enforcement by conducting routine identification checks and patrols and reporting their findings to their supervisor. Supervisors define the work assignments, regularly monitor work progress, and provide specific instruction and feedback

Typical responsibilities include the following:

  • Tracks and logs facility and service use; provides customer service to patrons; hooks-up water and electrical services; assists with routine clerical assignments.
  • Makes minor repairs; paints buildings and structures.
  • Assists Harbor Officers with Port Security; serves as a deck hand on the Port of Juneau Security Vessel; helps conduct inspections and patrols of infrastructure and facilities for suspicious packages and persons; marks restricted areas with fencing and other barriers; reports security threats and incidents to the immediate supervisor.
  • Assists CBJ emergency response personnel as needed to respond to security incidents; performs facility evacuation procedures.
  • Assists with vendor and loading zone management; checks vehicle, driver, and vendor identification; ensures vendors and drivers do not sell tours in loading zones; ensures vehicles are in appropriate lanes and do not stay beyond zone time limits; reports violations to the immediate supervisor.
  • May operate and/or assist with portable sewage pump.
  • May operate and/or assist with hydraulic boatlift.
  • Establishes restricted areas with fencing and other equipment; controls entry of persons, vehicles and cargo into restricted areas; reports security incidents.
  • Identifies and reports violations; issues requests for corrections, and notices of violations.
  • Maintains cleanliness of facilities; picks up and disposes of trash; removes unwanted debris from facilities; washes and power washes decks, sidewalks, and structures.
  • Assists in snow removal
  • Provides information to public on harbor rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Operates light trucks and passenger vehicles.
  • Provides customer service to patrons.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:           High school graduation or the equivalent.

Other:                  Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment; AND

A valid Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment.

The selected candidate will be required to sign non-disclosure agreements for sensitive security information.

In accordance with 33 CFR Part 105:

The selected candidate will be required to sign non-disclosure agreements for sensitive security information. The selected candidate must be able to successfully obtain a Transportation Workers Identification credential within 60 days of appointment.

Desired Qualifications

Experience:         Prior experience in vessel operation exceeding 18ft in length including VHF radio communications experience is desired but not required. Background in Customer Service.
