Assistant Library Technician

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK ON OUR TEAM
The Assistant Library Technician relief position is an important part of the Juneau Public Libraries and works as the face of the library. This person can expect to be busy working with the public and library staff providing a welcoming, helpful, and safe environment. This position works at the front desk, usually with a work partner, and monitors the library during shifts. Much of the time on the desk is spent using computers to search for materials or information using our database system, the library catalog, or other electronic resources as well as referring to senior staff.
The library staff is dedicated to serving our patrons in Juneau and those around the state. We use discretion and tact when interacting with patrons and hold patron confidentiality as one of the most important elements in the public service we provide.
WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
The Juneau Public Libraries have three branches: the downtown Juneau Public Library (located atop the Marine Parking Garage on the waterfront), the Mendenhall Valley Public Library (located in Dimond Park), and the Douglas Public Library (located in the Douglas Community Building, a shared facility with the Fire Department). Library staff offices are located at the downtown branch.
The libraries are open seven days a week and relief staff hours fluctuate from 0-40 hours per week, dependent upon need. This position works various shifts, from 2.5 to 5 hours in length, every day of the week between 10 AM and 8 PM. Schedules are created two weeks in advance but Relief staff are expected to be available and respond to additional communication when contacted.
Job Responsibilities
DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Library relief staff works varied schedules; substitutes for absent staff at all library branches on an as-needed basis, and attends staff meetings. Relief staff provide specialized technical library support and cover both circulation and reference responsibilities. This position frequently uses the library databases and electronic catalog, assists patrons in the use of library services and facilities, and discharges library materials. This position will assist patrons in a variety of ways including locating materials, assisting with the use of library equipment and wireless internet and taking payment for fees. This position also performs public service duties such as registering voters, and selling bus passes and tokens.
Library staff explain and enforce library rules and employ considerable independent judgement to correct inappropriate conduct including situations with patrons who may be experiencing substance abuse or mental health issues and are potentially violent.
Minimum Qualifications
DO I HAVE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS JOB – OUR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
Experience: Six (6) months of customer service experience that included the use of computer systems or databases.
SUBSTITUTION: Post-secondary education in any academic discipline from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 2.5 semester hours (3.75 quarter hours) for one month of experience. This equates to 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours = 12 months experience.
Other: Employee must have access to reliable transportation to transport self to Library branches.
