WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK IN OUR DEPARTMENT
The CBJ Law Department consists of the Criminal Section and the Civil Section, with ten employees in total. The Criminal Section consists of two Litigation & Support Assistants who share duties, and support two municipal prosecutors. The Criminal Section is a fast-paced work environment, and good communication and organizational skills are key to the success of the team. The Law Department offices are located in downtown Juneau, in the Sealaska Plaza Building. The office has achieved an all-electronic case management system, which we continue to improve upon with new technology. WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position works (Monday through Friday) 8am – 4:30pm. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau in the Sealaska Plaza Building directly across from City Hall, and within walking distance of the Dimond Courthouse.

Job Responsibilities
DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
The CBJ Criminal Section is responsible for the prosecution of the majority of misdemeanor crimes in Juneau. This position is fast-paced, dynamic, and integral to community safety. Under general direction, the Litigation & Support Assistant provides direct support – both administrative and litigation support – to two municipal prosecutors. This position is one of two criminal Litigation & Support Assistants in the office. The position includes daily communication with police officers, victims of crime, and defense attorneys. The position is responsible for processing incoming criminal cases, which includes opening and maintaining electronic case files, updating the case management system (LawBase) throughout the day, preparing legal documents such as complaints, motions, requests for restitution, and issuing subpoenas. This position also provides litigation support both pretrial and at trial by attending victim and witness interviews, processing discovery, assisting the prosecutor at trial by overseeing the handling of evidence, coordinating witness testimony, and providing other in-court assistance.

Minimum Qualifications
DO I HAVE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS JOB – OUR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing litigation assistance, law enforcement or law office clerical work.
Substitution: College or business college training in the field of criminal justice or legal studies may be substituted for the experience on the basis of 2.5 semester hours (3.75 quarter hours) for one month of experience. A paralegal certificate may be substituted for the required work experience.
