GIS Technician

Full Time 37.5 hours per week $25.82 - $27.54 Hourly (DOQ)

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for someone who is dependable, consistent, organized, and detail oriented. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, self-initiative, and be capable of working independently. Applicants should have experience in data collection for the purposes of GIS systems, experience in handling, maintaining, and programming data collection devices. The applicant will have good documentation skills and have the ability to review and search through records or reference material for information as needed.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK IN OUR DEPARTMENT

CDD is a dynamic department composed of Permitting, Planning, Building, and Administrative sections that together are responsible for administering the land use ordinances and building code regulations for the City and Borough of Juneau. WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position works (Monday through Friday) at 7.5 hours per day.  A typical day is 8:00am – 4:30pm. However, altering your shift to begin 2-4 hours earlier or later is not unusual. Your office is located in downtown Juneau in the Marine View Building, 230 S. Franklin Street.

Job Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

Under general guidance, as GIS Technician you will be collecting and compiling accurate data for GIS databases, using global navigation satellite system (GNSS), surveying equipment, and methodologies. You will also assist in the maintenance of GIS database layers (e.g., addresses, property boundaries, zoning, maps, street center-line, etc.) for tax assessment, 911 location services, and agency planning purposes.

GIS technicians use GNSS location and other surveying tools to collect points, elevations, slope, cadastral, wetland and vegetation classification models and other field data. You will be conducting verification and identification of infrastructure and topographical data; conducting field verifications from as-built drawings and engineering drawings, and making corrections where necessary. You will operate and adjust electronic GNSS field equipment to conduct field data collection and transcribe data from digital files and/or hard copy into GIS databases.

As a GIS Tech you will create detailed logs and reports of collected data into established formats in support of updating the CBJ Comprehensive Plan. Which involves collecting and maintaining digital photographic records of city structures and any changes to structures. This also requires incorporating GNSS control points, wetland delineations and other field data into GIS electronic layers and databases. As part of this process you will receive, prepare, complete, and forward/retain various forms, reports, correspondence, survey result logs/reports, inspection results, geo-database reports/downloads, work orders, as-built drawings, engineering drawings, GIS/GNSS data logs, statistical accuracy reports, aerial photographs, technical manuals, historical documentation, maps, policies, and any other reference materials. As listed, this is a very multifaceted position, and you may be asked to perform other related duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION:                High school graduation or equivalent; AND

EXPERIENCE:              One (1) year experience and/or training involving geographical information system (GIS) operations, computerized mapping, field data collection, surveying, and personal computer operations; AND

OTHER:                             A valid driver’s license at time of appointment and for continued employment.
