INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Fatality Motor Vehicle Crash - EOB at Fred Meyer - Updated
Date: 2023-06-11
From: Erann Kalwara - JPD PIO
Case or Incident: #2023-06100053
Summary:

***** Updated 06/13/2023 4:10 p.m. *****

The driver of the maroon truck has been identified as 59 year old Juneau resident Dennis Tyson.

*****

At about 3:06 p.m. on Saturday June 10th, multiple 9-1-1 calls were received reporting a rollover motor vehicle collision on Egan Drive near Old Dairy Road. The first JPD officer who arrived on scene reported multiple critical injuries and people entrapped in a vehicle. Capital City Fire/Rescue personnel were already enroute and more apparatus and personnel were dispatched due to the number of patients, the extent of their injuries and condition of the vehicles.

The 59 year old driver of a maroon 2004 Dodge truck was declared deceased at the scene. His 42 year female old passenger was transported by ambulance to BRH. The 37 year old driver of a blue 1999 Ford Ecoline van and her two 8 year old female passengers were also transported to BRH by ambulance. All surviving individuals have been medevaced out of Juneau for advanced medical care.

The preliminary investigation by JPD patrol officers and the JPD Major Accident Response Team indicate the blue Ford van was driving inbound on Egan Drive, making a left hand turn toward Old Dairy Road and the Fred Meyer access area and the maroon truck was driving outbound prior to the collision.  Both vehicles sustained extensive damage, were totaled and impounded.

Traffic was diverted to allow responders to safely rescue people and investigate the collision. The roadway was open to unrestricted traffic at around 6:30 p.m. last night. DOT responded to clear the area prior to all sections being opened for through traffic.

This was a very serious crash, in a busy area and we appreciate all the assistance provided by the Juneau Citizen’s Patrol, an Alaska State Trooper, a U.S. Forrest Service Officer, on and off duty JPD and CCF/R personnel and CCF/R volunteers during the response efforts. Thank you to the members of the public that refrained from visiting the area and those that took care to travel safely through if needed without interfering with responders.

The investigation is ongoing.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
