Date: 2022-07-05
From: Erann Kalwara - JPD PIO
Case or Incident: #220705-009
Summary:

On July 5th 2022 at about 12:53pm a JPD officer and a private property owner observed a person who appeared to be “squatting” without permission inside the homeowner’s shed in the 1600 block of Mendenhall Peninsula Road. The officer identified the person as Ben Parson.

The officer told Parson he was under arrest for an outstanding warrant and Parson grabbed a nearby rifle. The officer and homeowner moved to safety. Parson refused to come out of the shed.

Multiple JPD officers, a state trooper and the JPD Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the scene.  A Capital City Fire/Rescue ambulance staged in the area. At about 1:30 pm a shot was fired from inside the shed.

At about 1:58 pm, Parson was taken into custody on the $50,000 felony warrant. He was additionally charged with Escape in the third degree and Criminal Mischief.  The roadway was closed for about 50 minutes. No one was injured during the incident.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
