INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Motor Vehicle Crash
Date: 2021-10-16
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #211016-002
Summary:

On 10/16/2021, at about 2:36 PM, the Juneau Police Department was notified of an attempted traffic stop by a USFS Officer in the area of Eagle Beach. The USFS Officer had attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a green Subaru as it left the area of the Eagle Beach campground and headed inbound on Glacier Highway. The Subaru did not stop and continued driving inbound at a high rate of speed; illegally passing vehicles and driving erratically. The Subaru continued onto Mendenehall Loop Road (Back loop) where it attempted to pass a red Ford pickup in the area of Blueberry Lane. The Ford pickup was making a left turn onto Blueberry Lane, when it was struck on its drivers side, by the Subaru, which was attempting to pass.

JPD and CCFR responded to the motor vehicle crash to assist. Both the driver, identified as a 22-year-old male Juneau resident, and passenger, identified as a 31-year-old female Juneau resident, sustained serious injuries during the crash. They were transported to the hospital for medical treatment. The occupants of the Ford pickup sustained only minor injuries and did not need transportation to the hospital. Both vehicles sustained extensive damages and are believed to be totaled.

Following the crash, JPD learned that the driver of the Subaru had several outstanding arrest warrants.

This section of the roadway was closed for several hours while JPD investigated the crash.

This case is still under investigation.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues.
