INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Death Investigation
Date: 2021-09-07
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #210905-006
Summary:

On 09/05/2021, at about 4:30 PM, the Juneau Police Department was notified of an accidental drowning death on Eagle River, located about 4-miles North of Glacier Highway, off the Amalga Trail. It was reported to JPD that two males had taken rafts down Eagle River, after a group had overnighted at the Eagle Glacier cabin. While going down the river, both rafts overturned and the males went into the water. One of the males was trapped in some river debris and later became fully submerged under water, unable to be dislodged.

CCFR, with assistance from the USCG, attempted to conduct a recovery later that evening. A USCG helicopter transported CCFR personnel to the site on Eagle River. Recovery operations were attempted, but due to weather and river conditions, they had to be postponed until the following day.

On 09/06/2021, at about 12:30 PM, recovery operations continued and they were able to successfully recover the body from the water. The deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Jeffrey DeRonde. Next of kin has been notified.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
