INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Firearm Discharge at Apartment Complex
Date: 2021-05-18
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #210517-011
Summary:

On 05/17/2021, at about 6:08 p.m., the Juneau Police Department received a report of a firearm being discharged in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 5000 block of  Glacier Highway. The complainant reported the firearm was discharged following an argument between some residents of the apartment complex, but nobody was injured.

JPD responded to the area and located the individuals who were believed to be involved in the argument. The argument was believed to be regarding some tools and had been ongoing for most of the day. Following the argument, one of the residents, 35-year-old Cain Inskeep Melton, went back into his apartment, while the other party involved in the argument stayed outside. Soon afterwards, a gunshot was heard from inside the apartment and a bullet was allegedly fired from inside the apartment, through the front door of the apartment.

JPD obtained search warrants for the residence where the gun was believed to be fired and located two firearms inside.

Melton was placed under arrest for assault 3rd degree and misconduct involving weapons in the 4th degree. Melton was taken to the jail and held without bail.

Alcohol appears to be a factor in the cause of this incident.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
