INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Domestic Violence Assault
Date: 2019-10-21
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #191019-007
Summary:

On 10/19/19, at about 1PM, the emergency room at Bartlett Regional Hospital reported to JPD that a 79-year-old male Juneau resident had come into the ER with significant injuries related to an assault. Most of the male's face, head and neck were black and blue; both arms and legs had extensive bruising and there was a large open wound on his right arm. The male had bruising on his chest, stomach and back; bruising on his inner thighs and a large open wound on his right lower leg that had become infected.

The 79-year-old male told police the assault occurred on 10/16/19, while in his home, located in the 1900 block of Lemon Creek Road. The man said he laid in bed for three days before regaining the strength to walk to the city bus stop to go to the hospital.

ER staff told police that due to the man's age, prior health condition, and lack of medical care for three days, the injuries sustained in the assault could have been life threatening.

Later that same day, at about 7PM, the Juneau Police Department served a search warrant on the residence of the 79-year-old male. The search warrant was to look for evidence of the assault, and because the suspect was believed to be living there. At the residence, officers contacted multiple people inside. Several people contacted at the residence told police that on 10/16/19, they saw 53-year-old Juneau resident, Kevin Willis assault the 79-year-old male. The witnesses told police they thought Willis would have killed the 79-year-old male if they hadn't stopped Willis. During the search of the residence, officers found blood on the carpet, walls, and furniture of one of the bedrooms where the assault allegedly took place.

Willis was also located at the residence. Officers placed Willis under arrest for assault in the 2nd degree, related to domestic violence, all of which is a class B felony offense. Willis was taken to the jail and held without bail.

Willis and the 79-year-old male are related by adoption and live together at the same residence.
