INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Passerby Interrupts Assault – Suspect Arrested
Date: 2019-05-29
From: Erann Kalwara - JPD PIO
Case or Incident: #190528-011
Summary:

On May 28th at around 5:19pm, the Juneau Police Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting an assault was occurring near the clock on the corner of Front and Franklin Streets.  A man with a knife was reportedly hitting another man repeatedly.

It was determined that the 51 year old male victim was walking on the sidewalk with a 44 year old female companion. They encountered Thomas May who started yelling at the victim then began punching him. Several nearby witnesses intervened, and a 37 year old Juneau man placed the suspect in a “bear hug” and released him when he became concerned about the knife. At that point, the suspect fled the scene.  The suspect was known by the victim and his companion.

Within five minutes, the suspect was located and detained by JPD officers. Thomas J. May, a 39 year old Juneau man, was arrested for Assault in the 3rd degree and transported to and lodged at Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues. Any charges reported in this release are merely accusations and all persons named in this release are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
