Subject: Motor Vehicle Crash
Date: 2019-03-14
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #190313-001
Summary:

On 03/13/2019, at about 7:36AM, the Juneau Police Department received a report of a head on motor vehicle crash in the area of Mendenhall Loop Road and Goat Hill Road. A total of five cars were involved in the crash.

The investigation showed that a green Honda CRV was traveling on Mendenhall Loop Road from the area of UAS towards the Glacier, when it lost control on the icy roads and drifted into the oncoming lane; striking a white Ford pickup that was driving in the opposite direction.

A black Toyota 4Runner was travelling in the area and was attempting to slow down for the crashed vehicles, when they were struck from behind by a silver Toyota RAV. A black Dodge RAM was travelling behind the Toyota RAV and was unable to stop in time, striking the Toyota RAV from behind.

The driver and passenger of the Honda CRV, as well as the driver of the Toyota 4Runner, sustained non-life threatening injuries during the crash and were transported to the hospital by CCFR.

The Honda CRV is believed to have sustained totaling damages. The other four vehicles sustained a combined damage of approximately $15,000. The Honda CRV, Ford pickup and the Toyota 4Runner were towed from the scene. The Toyota RAV and Dodge RAM were driven from the scene.

The driver of the Honda CRV, twenty year old Erin McCarthy, was cited for basic speed and failing to show proof of insurance.

During the investigation of the crash, the roadway was closed for approximately one hour. The roadway was extremely icy and DOT responded with de-icing equipment.

All the occupants of the vehicles are currently believed to be in stable condition.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues.
