INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Stabbing
Date: 2018-06-04
From: Lieutenant Krag Campbell
Case or Incident: #180603-008
Summary:

On 06/03/2018, at about 5:32 PM, the Juneau Police Department received a 911 call regarding a disturbance in the area of Marine Way and Ferry Way. The caller reported a man had been stabbed.

JPD and CCFR responded to the area and located a 41 year old male Juneau resident, who was identified by witnesses as the person who had stabbed the other man. The man who had been stabbed was no longer in the area.

The 41 year old male identified the knife that was used in the stabbing, which was a folding pocket knife and it was located on a nearby bench. The 41 year old male directed officers to the area where the person who had been stabbed was last seen walking away.

In the 200 block of S. Franklin Street, JPD and CCFR located a 35 year old male Juneau resident, who was lying on the ground. The male had an injury to his lower abdomen that was consistent with being stabbed. CCFR transported the man to the hospital for further medical treatment.

Witnesses to the incident reported the 35 year old male, prior to the stabbing, had been trying to start fights with multiple people in the downtown area. The 41 year old male reported the 35 year old male approached him, challenged him to fight, and then punched him on the side of the head. In response, the 41 year old male pulled out the knife and stabbed the 35 year old male, once in the abdomen.

The 35 year old male sustained serious injuries. He was treated at the hospital and is currently in stable condition.

The 41 year old male was interviewed by police and then later released.

This case is still under investigation. Alcohol appears to be a factor in this incident.

All factual allegations contained in this release are based upon preliminary investigation and are subject to change or clarification as the investigation continues.
