As the end of the school year nears, we ask that parents, students, and community members join the Juneau Police Department and the Juneau School District in being extra vigilant in making behavioral observations, practicing general safety measures and providing emotional support and guidance to children and young adults.

All year long, our school resource officers spend time in the schools getting to know students, gaining their trust and assisting teachers and administrators with identifying children that may need some extra support. Empowering students to share information with trusted adults and officials when things are irregular or suspicious is essential to stopping harmful events before they happen.

Juneau Police patrol officers are spending extra time in and around the schools this week to assist with promoting an atmosphere where children feel comfortable speaking up if something is wrong. This may include anyone exhibiting stalking behavior, paranoid ideations, depression or sharp changes in behavior. The community can help keep students safe by encouraging anyone with strong personal strife to manage feelings in a healthy way. Assist them in seeking a counselor or trusted friend to talk with. Schools are open through the end of the week, and the district office is open all summer.

Parents and family are always encouraged to have open conversations with children about safety and feelings. This helps children build self-esteem and confidence in knowing what to do when they are uncomfortable. JPD officers look forward to seeing everyone out and about enjoying a safe graduation weekend.
